|
|
Over the last several days, I've received invitations to become 'friends' (or contacts, whatever) on Nextcat from people I've never met nor heard of. However, when I look through the list of responders, I see a few of you in there.
I wonder if they just contact the contacts of every one of their new contacts and just keep going down then line.
I'm a complete n00b as sites like that, so what I'm looking for is input on what to do with these contacts. Is it normal to get random invites, so go ahead and accept it and forget about it? Should I only accept invites from people I know or have something to do with? By not accepting the random contacts, am I defeating the purpose of even being on there?
I'm curious to know your take on this. Guidance, please!
Thanks!

It's normal to get random invites. Probably someone contacting another contact's contacts. Networking in a web 2.0 world... _________________ Jeff

Hey Amanda,
Nextcat is an industry networking site and as we all know, it's all about networking. I suggest you accept every friend invite except for those you feel are inappropriate (anything explicit or that goes against your values). Once you do that, join MySpace. Then Facebook. Then Linked In. Then Bebo. Then go find some more.
Get out there and network, girl! _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

Well, I guess I'm about to get a lot more 'friendly'!
On LinkedIn and FaceBook, I've only contacted or been contacted by actual acquaintances. Time to expand.
Watch out for MY invites now!

not that i don't need all the friends i can get...but i too have gotten several mysterious emails cheerily announcing someone i've never heard of has added me as a friend on facebook or something.
since i have such a lousy memory, i've gone and checked these "friends" and still have no clue as to why they contacted me. so i silently decline.
i do respond to the "linkdin" notices, though. every one of them has been from someone i either know, know of, or have worked with.
at least my other mystery "friends" aren't asking for money. _________________ rowell gormon

Has anybody allowed Nextcat or any of these other social/business connection sites to rummage through their email interface to look for people to connect with? I'm just wondering what kind of havoc might or might not be wrought as a result. |

I did it this morning and there didn't seem to be any deleterious effects. I'll let you know if my internet turns green and explodes... _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

Mary,
I've done this with Plaxo, though that's not really a social networking site, with no ill effects or at least none of which I'm aware. But Plaxo gives you total control over who gets invitations rather than sending them automatically. _________________ Be well,

I received an invite from someone named "Tom" on Nextcat. It feels strange. I don't know him. I'm wondering about this, too. _________________ Bobbin Beam

OK fine. Ya got me. Sorry that I didn't click on the profile and see it was you. I actually deleted it because the approach just said "Tom", without a last name. I've filtered so much spam from first names only- spammers that appear to know you by going by a first name basis only, It put me off. I guess I was suspicious and acted hastily. The amount of time required on all the many social networking sites is not always available to me. I already spend a ton of time on the internet, and bla bla bla. Hope you are not offended. I'll check it out now.
I must say that this is THE place on the web I enjoy spending time on the most! _________________ Bobbin Beam

No problem, Bobbin. That's one of the problems with networking sites. You never know who these people are. All you can do is keep your eyes open and run your antivirus & spybot progams. Internet marketing & networking is a hassle but it's a necessary evil in our industry these days! _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

Playing devil's advocate: what if it weren't Tom Dheere (Rognog), and just some no name, no affiliation Tom, Dick or Harry. You look at the profile and really say 'geez, I don't know this guy'.
Do you accept? |

I accept if they're in our business or a related one.
The worst that can happen is they start sending me emails. If the emails become burdensome/are uninteresting I can tell my box trapper to Ignore them.
For the most part that doesn't happen. |
