Here in the last days of 2007, is anyone thinking about getting new, updated or additional gear for more tax write-offs for this year?

How about plans to invest any tax returns in new equipment?

(Just a little survey to see whats on your mind and if we can find some deals.)

Willie,

I will be getting two items:

1. An MHK-416 (thanks to you for your assistance in that matter)

2. An M-Audio Fast Track Pro audio interface so I can religate my MobilePre to road work only.

Bob,

I'll be very interested to hear how you sound on the 416. If you have the time, please post a file.

Joe,

I think Dan Nachtrab can send you something, since I borrowed his studio while I was in Ohio in October. Otherwise, I'll be happy to post something here once it's arrived and set up...any day now.

A new computer is on the wishlist... and maybe a traveling USB mic -- I was looking at the R0DE podcaster...

Before anyone invest in a new mic, especially a new USB condenser, I may have a big Christmas surprise for you on our VOMicTest page real soon. Wink

Hey Bob (and everybody)...

In reference to the Sennheiser 416, I just got one as an early Christmas present as well as end-of-year write off.

Dan Nachtrab was a great help in making the decision to go for it.

I have no regrets! I believe you will love it. Smile

If anyone needs me to post a file for comparison, just let me know.

if dan says 416, now i'm thinking i should get one!

i really need a new car. to replace "columbia," my white subie that sheds parts every time i drive it.
but ... i don't have to drive it much so here's hoping it'll make it through the 2008 atmosphere.
heh.

It takes a while to learn how to use a 416. It can be harsh if used wrong and a 416 through a bad pre will be just that. If you like to move around a lot or have sibilance issues...it is not the mic for you.

I really like the 414....made by AKG....very under-rated mic IMO. A few varieties out there. Some better for voice than the others....can't remember the models but it is obvious when looking at specs which is best for voice versus instruments etc. One to look at for sure for less money than a Sennheiser 416.

My next mic will be a Neumann U87 sooner than later...solid built mic, excellent sound, exceptional name, all the clients I work with use them......nobody questions a U87.

I like the 414s I've used in a few studios too.

I owned a 416 for a few years and sold it, even though I also do field audio engineering. I always use other shotguns (Sankens and Sennheiser MKH-60s) instead. I use Schoeps and Sennheiser MKH-50s on location instead of 416s for voiceovers.

I'm comfortable working with a 416 for vo, and it is a very good mic. However, I brought mine into Atlanta Pro Audio to test drive it with lots of very good preamps to see if I was perhaps missing something. It only played nicely with the much darker sounding preamps.

A word of warning to those who think they'll avoid ambient noise issues with the 416's narrow focus: the benefits of that narrow focus are cancelled out by the 416's long throw. I'd only use a 416 in a large well treated room.

Dianne, I'm not a big fan of 416s on many female voices, and I think they make esses nashsssssssssssssty even on non-sibilant voices. I really like the way you're sounding right now!

Diane:
I'm with Lance. The 416 is not flattering on the ladies.
Mics I have that sound very good on my female partner are..

AT4040
Rode NTG-1 shotgun (smoother and less sibilant than 416, $250!)
EV RE-20

What are you using now?
Your demos and website are very good!!

thanks, bill!

i just finished recording a scratch track for alcatel-lucent using an AT 3035, and have considered comparing that with the 4040 for better quality ...

very familiar with the re-20, having toiled in radio far too long (a familiar story, i'm sure!) and have a borrowed one for my phone aHobo Tounges (lo-fi, vox studio software usage). i do like it, since there is great room for error, or what-have-you.

I had an AT3035 for two days and re-sold (re-gifted) it on e-bay.
It wasn't bad, just a bit "grainy" sounding. The 4040 is much better.

The RE-20 is very good on females. I think DB uses one. Some people poohpooh them, but with good technique and a little processing, I think they're very flattering and the esssses ar smooth and clean.

We always do tax planning by the first week in December to figure out what to do by year's end. It turns out that we paid so much -in quarterly estimated taxes this year and spent so much on our cost of doing business...we're most probably looking at a refund- depending on how the last month or so shakes down. cool
