Anyone have experience with the Neumann KM184? Most of the studios in Tokyo use U87s but there's one that uses the KM184. And, wow, it sounds really smooth and buttery. And doesn't seem as "sensitive" to pops and clicks as the large diaphragm Neumanns, i.e. TLM103/U87.

From what I have experienced in the past, it is very suitable for recording instruments. It is a key microphone for classical music recording. I would NEVER use it on close miked VO's because of its sensitivity to low-frequency mechanical vibrations. As a friend of mine would put it... a light puff of air is enough "to stick" the diaphragm and provoke/could lead to brutal overload. Try it on recording the piano though, and that instrument will have a whole new sound to it.

Lovely mic, but only expose it to voice-over workings if you have the equipment / discipline / studio environment to work at a decent distance away from it, otherwise the capsule will, as the previous poster indicates, pack up its bag and leave in an expensive manner!

Chris,

That wasn't over at Studio Glad was it? I think they've stuck an SD Neumann in my face before now.

Actually, I'm recording there tomorrow, so I'll take a look (which kinda makes this post redundant. At least it ups my post count without being too facetious.)

I think the previous posters have it right. Use with caution.

That said, they're nice on some people for VO. If you have them in your collection, don't immediately discard them for an LDC. You might be (pleasantly) surprised with what you get.
