Had a lengthy phone patch corporate narration today with a very somewhat stilted script in parts (but I had to be conversational, of course). They were really nice folks to work with.

Dayum if I couldn't spit out the word...

REGULARLY!!!

They actually considered changing it to "frequently" just for lil' ole me.

We kept "regularly," but I don't know that I ever said it correctly. Have a feeling I'll be hearin' from them for a pickup.

Funny how sometimes we are tripped up by words that we use all the time...for me, the issue is saying it in a "broadcast-worthy" way...without the slurring that's easy to do in conversation.

The word "regularly" falls into that category.

"Dr. Raul Rodriguez" did me in today.

It sounded a lot like "regularly" when I said it, so next time you could try his name.

This past Oct., I narrated "The Invisible Man" live on stage for Radio Theatre. As I'm wrapping up the show, one of the lines was "....the powerful secret to invisibility". I flubbed "invisibility". Just couldn't come out right.

Oh yeah. A NY Times critic was there

Paddyo,

I read your line out loud and screwed up "powerful"... go figure.

Love your avatar -- we were just down at Lincoln Center last week for a concert and took pix of ourselves in front of the tree, too!

Todd,

I tried your "Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center" line a few times, and wasn't even able to get through it without laughing, let alone getting the pronunciation right.

Kudos for getting through that script!

I have to add - I too hate the word "regularly". I have whined, cussed, pleaded, and even asked nicely of producers and copywriters to change the word in the copy whenever I encounter weg-u-lar-lee - and sometimes they grant my request...

Now back to your reg-woo-ul-arlee -- huh hummm - er - normally scheduled program.

Toodles

Sadly, I cannot identify with your miseries.
Oddly, with English being my second language, I find it ridiculously easy to articulate.
My weekly Thursday morning sessions, on the other hand, this week included
"ALVORLIG HJERTESLAG" (Norwegian for 'serious heart attack"), which I stumbled over repeatedly.
Almost had one, in fact.

Try that, folks.

Heh!! I'll leave the Scandinavian heart failure to you.

I think our own Bruce came up with the exercise to break "regularly" into 2 parts and say them somewhat separately:

regu
larly

Try teaching Bostonians how to say that word in a Standard American accent!
Good Lord.

Say "regularly" in your best (or worst) Irish-y accent. You should probably smile a wee bit on the "reg" and the Ls will be taking your tongue to your teeth.

Now back off the Lucky Charms pedal and make that same motion in your own voice.

I can hear it now: "reg-YOO-lah-lee"

or maybe "reg-yuh-luh-lee"

I'm too lazy to search, but I had thought it was Frank who offered the advice of breaking the word up and saying "regu regu, regu" then "lurly lurly lurly". But if it was Bruce, so be it. Whomever it was...thanks. I've used that little trick more than once to get through that &^)#^% word.
