A "quiet room" is far, far different from "a room of one's own".

When I try to explain to others who do not know what I do for a "living" I mention I go into a padded room, lock the door, turn down the lights, and talk to myself.

People seem to understand me a bit better after my explanation. No one wants to talk with me, but they do understand.

Frank, Melissa:

My voice-over coach always describes the studio as the padded room where she gets to go crazy and get paid for it. I love her POV from the padded room...

Even in an iso booth there are some noise issues, but a heck of a lot less!
I live in the helicopter flyway between Miramar and Camp Pendleton. They just seem to know when I have a long -form narration and a tight deadline!!!!! Angry

Bobbin,

Your "in the flyway" story reminds me of the standup we were doing live at a facility near here last fall -- just as we started shooting the talent, the local police force started target practice at a closed range about half a mile away. We had doing our filming in between fusillades.

1 - if you use 1010222 (which is MCI's dial-around code as Ben pointed out) BUT you don't already have MCI as your PIC, then you will be pretty much killed by the rate!

Just an update. Anthony was soooooooooooo friggin' right on this one. I was testing my line with Dan-O last month or whenever it was after getting ISDN hooked in at the home studio and was using the PIC code for MCI to dial out since the line did not have long distance set up yet. I guess Dan and I got carried away talking for 10 minutes in crystal clear 128kbps mono......$24.00 later......yes, I got slammed by MCI on my phone bill. Was it worth it? Yes. Talking to Dan-O, priceless Laugh Laugh Laugh

Lesson: Don't use those stinkin' PIC codes....ever!!!!

From me in the UK to you in the USA the cost for 10 minutes ISDN would be 0.96 cents.

UPDATE FROM CAMP COOPER
the last trouble was a fried network card, replaced to the tune of $300.

Man— I've got a fully-rebuilt codec now.
I may rethink buying a spare.
For now.

Something zapped some components in my office, I don't know when. One channel combo on my stereo amp got killed, too. Didn't discover it until last week.

I will be making sure all components are plugged into suppressor/UPS's from here on in which means buying more of THEM.
I made the mistake of plugging the codec into the wall when I got it back from Telos repair in October.
boo! Look in the mirror and see the dummy.
