For years I've been using the Sony MDR-V600 for my on-air work (with its huge bass boost to make me sound bigger and radioier to myself!), and I knew I needed something else for voicework. I was looking at the Sony MDR-7506 model that a lot of people love... I never really cared for its sound though (too tinny to me). Then I found the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro... love them! They block out sound very well and seem to give very a accurate sound... I've read reviews that say they're more accurate than the 7506s and I've read some that say the opposite, but if you're looking for an alternative to the MDR-7506 these are definitely worth checking out. (Plus they're only $100!) _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

teh k00l!
speaking of which, i got the sony 7506 last spring because they came highly recommended here. however ... just recently i have no sound from them
what's the best way to troubleshoot? the mic jack in my mackie board? the adapter plug (well, that's not it--i tried that) or ... what?
not convinced it IS the phones, as it could be the board. is there some type of use-a-paper-clip trick to ensure all the things are meeting the other things to make it work?
oh wait--i should try them in a different jack, on a different piece of equipment with a headphone jack. but, in advance, what if it IS the phones? or the board?
you can pay no attention to me if you think that's best ... _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

reduce your variables. Do the cans work if you plug them into an MP3 player? If so, it ain't the headphones. Move to the mixer. Do other headphones work? If not, you've found your problem, or at least the start of it. _________________ Jeff

Do you have an iPod? Pretty sure the earbuds will work if you have a 3rd-party plug adapter (I doubt the earbud plug will fit the Sony screw-on adapter). _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

I have an adapter you can use if you move back to New England. |

Chris,
Same headphones I've been using now for a couple of years. I've always been a Sennheiser bigot. Welcome! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Chris, Bob,
Thanks for sharing that. The Senn 280s have been on my "next set to try" list for a while. My question is how tight are they on your head? A friend suggested they were very tight on his head after a day in the studio....But he has a very big head. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

I prefer working with Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic and even AT headphones for actually being on the mic...but when it comes to being the engineer, the Sony 7506s are excellent for troubleshooting audio quality. I do agree that they can sound tinny. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

They are big cans to be sure, and a little snugger than my old ones... my usual hat-size is 7-and-a-half and I can see them being a little fatiguing if I were wearing them all day long non-stop, but for a 1-hour session or whatever I wouldn't have any trouble. And they are excellent for blocking out outside noise. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

I have had Sony 7506 for years. In location video/film sound work it was either the BeyerDynamic at about $300 or the Sony for $100. I got the Sony's.
I had the good fortune to get two pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pro about 2 years ago on a special deal. The music company my wife works for had some water damage to the boxes and they wrote them off. I scooped them up.
I use the Sony’s for years and one did wear out. The other one needs new pads and they are available from a professional broadcast gear houses.
The Sennheisers on the other hand look like they won’t live as long as the Sony’s.
On one at the head band I have noticed that the plastic is showing cracking.
Believe me I and very careful not to abuse my gear. Even when it’s free.
I like the sound of both. The Sennheiser HD 280 Pros do seem a bit heaver in the bottom end. I think the Sony’s will live longer. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

I had a pair of 7506's that lasted me something like 13 years before one ear crapped out. Actually, I still have them in a box somewhere but I decided they'd had a good life and bought another set rather than fiddling with the baby fine hairs in them they call wires. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

I have the HD280 Pro model and they are nice. More snug on the head, which means more isolation but they give you headphone fatigue if you wear them too long because of the tighter fit. _________________ Ben

I likes my new Sony MDR-V600 's.
I tried some Phillips headphones recently, but they pressed on my masseter muscle like crazy.
bleah!

After years of using Beyer Dt 100s, Santa brought me a new pair of DT150s, they are superb, light and comfortable with a great frequency response. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com
