I've been blogging for over a year but I'm just starting to learn how to "get it out there". I use Yahoo Geocities for my website and blog. I know very little HTML code which is why I use templates to update my website and post blog entries.

Recently I have joined MyBlogLog, Technorati, and (just a few minutes ago) Feedburner. Do I need all three or is one enough? Also, I have had alot of problems setting up the tracking features. I'm never sure where to insert the HTML code and what it should contain. Most of the sites say to put it in my blog template but I don't think I have one.

Can someone break it down for me or direct to a website that can?

Tom (and Brian)...

I think all 3 are valuable and worth joining. They each provide different kinds of services without a huge amount of overlap.

As for where to put the code. In your templates that you use to update your site, if there are options of where you can insert text that will stay on the front of your blog, that's where you'll want to paste the tracking code. (Brian, for Wordpress, the best plan is to use a theme that supports widgets, use a text box widget and put the tracking code in there. All of this will become clear as you plunge in to the wonderful world of blogging.)

Either of you are welcome to call me and I'll be happy to offer what help I can.

HTML is really fairly easy to understand. I guess dealing with the old Wordperfect software back in the 80s helped me get it.
But if you can use templates, you really should look into some of the web builder software. A lot of it these days is drag and drop. I still use frontpage for my site, but I took a course in Dreamweaver and I'm using it for my Condo Association site. Dreamweaver is really cool, but it can be tedious if you get real intense.
Want all the HTML answers? Here is the best website I've ever found, and I've learned a lot from them:

I had a blog on another server and someone was telling me that it would help my site more if I could use Wordpress and have the blog on my own domain. So I've done that, but getting into the Wordpress files on my server has been a little frustrating. There are a ton of great books out there, you just have to find one written in a way that makes it easy for you.

My library didn't have "Blogging for Dummies" (thanks for the recommenation, Jeff) but I did pick up "Blog On". I haven't dived into it yet.

I think my main problem is that I use Geocities/Yahoo 360 to post my blog. I dont think they have some of the basic features that alot of you are referring to. For example, I can't alter the date of a blog entry to keep it up front. Also, there is no "blog template".

Anyway, time to hit the books!

TypePad by Six Apart

Some people (or VO juggernauts, like Bob Souer) swear by WordPress. I just couldn't warm up to it after two in-depth attempts.

My previous blog was hosted by GoDaddy BlogCast, but it had some limitations I grew frustrated with.

TypePad....not free, but fairly inexpensive, and VERY VERY feature-rich.

Dave,

You're right. I do like Wordpress and recommend it. But Typepad is a terrific alternative. I'm very glad to know you like it and that it's working well for you.
