Somebody just wrote to ask if I know of "an application or combination of hardware and software that will take a narration file and create a written transcript". I have no idea whatsoever (although I think they used to call them stenographers).

Anybody ever hear of such a thing?

Try these:

I don't have any personal experience with them, but the Dragon software usually get high marks in general.

I don't know about the others, but Dragon Naturally Speaking needs to be 'trained' to your voice. And 99% accurate can still be a real pain to edit.

The training for Dragon is really quite easy. It involves you reading a passage. There are on going trainings to tighten things but for the most part Dragon 9.5 works great!

It's powered by Dragon, so it is as good or better. Only takes 5 minutes of training, pretty impressive. I setup the previous version of software for a client, iListen, and it worked pretty well.

The challenging part is working with material read by someone else that you aren't able to get to train the system.
