ok gearheads ... help! i'm getting faint RF thru my monitors. it is not coming thru the board - so no quality issues ... i only hear it when the room is completely quiet. VERY faint - but there. i am already running everything thru a line conditioner ... any ideas?

btw: there is a b'cast tower about a 1/2 mile north of me and as i listen ... yup, that is the culprit.

First thing to do would be to find out how it's getting in. The usual culprit is the lines going to the speakers. You could try shorter cables or better shielded ones.

I have other ideas dealing with low pass filters, but I'll wait to see if anyone else has other suggestions before going that route.

hmmm, i just mounted the monitors on the wall --- SO i am now using longer cables ... that's a great place to start. - thanks, bob.

other than from the case itself (loose connection touching something in the mobo), I'm with Bob.

That you just noticed the problem after using longer cables lends credence to his observation.

Hey Todd,

Are they active monitors with built-in amps? If so, have you tried raising the volume on them WITHOUT anything plugged in to the input of the monitors? If the RFI is still there you should consider shielding them with tinfoil on the inside, or -better yet- isolate the internal amp and shield that. Also take a look at your cables and don't forget to check possible interference on your monitor's PSU's. If another signal 'dances' on your DC, you can be very sure this will be audible in the end.

yes, they are active monitors. when i remove the cable the RF is still there. the level setting on the monitor has no effect on the output ... very low no matter how high i turn them up.

Could it be coming from the power cord? Can you clamp that off with one of those ferrite choke dealies?

If they are 3 prong, you can try isolating the ground by getting a 2 prong adapter, see if that eliminates the hum.

no luck with the 2-prong adapter - still there. do those ferrite-clip-on-deals really work?

again - this is MUCH lower than the hum of my external HD (when i have it on, of course)
