|
|
Posting this here, in case anyone here encounters similar problems - this might save them some time.
My PC (luckily I only use it to receive copy and print - I record on my Mac) started getting the Blue Screen of death (I think it's called a BSOD error) stating:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
After THREE days of internet searches, troubleshooting, removing/updating/rolling back drivers, uninstalling possible IRQ conflicts like modems, etc. - I came across THIS page.
The very first thing it mentioned was that my processor might've been overheating. I went into the BIOS to check the temperature and sure enough it was hot as all heck! (I think it was about 117F or something like that).
I immediately opened the CPU case and took apart the heatsink and cooling fan assembly and it was just PLUGGED UP WITH DIRT! Very little if no room for air to move through and cool. I cleaned it up, put it back together, and BOOM - no more errors.
So if you've had your PC for more than a year, and are experiencing problems - BEFORE you go troubleshooting - check your processor temp, provide good cooling, and clean out the dust bunnies from that puppy we have come to rely on so much.
PEACE.

This is excellent advice.
About a month ago I was having lots of disk access when I ran my recording software (soundforge) or copying files from hard drive to backup, etc. Things were slowing down badly. Couldn't figure it out.
Finally got down on my knees and looked at the fans. They WERE COVERED WITH CAT HAIR. Got a can of air, cleaned out the grills, etc. and now the computer is running cool and happy.
This is not just a problem with PCs. Check out the fans on your Mac and Apples too... anything with a fan can get clogged with dust, etc.
Thank you and good night. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

I put my CPU up on a small table which helps a bit with all the dog hair that used to clog it up. Just getting it up off the floor really helped. _________________ Elaine

Jeffrey,
It gets worse. I have FOUR cats...
Putting the computer up on the desk would make more fan noise available to the microphone. Now I just spritz my computer vents with canned air a few times a week...

Yup. You got it in one.
And, one of our cats is very good at finding new combos of keys and functions in Adobe Aftereffects...

You realize that when you do that, you're blowing the air inside the computer, right? Which is what you want to avoid in the first place. You're much better off popping the case off and vacuuming the crud out.
You'd also be better off getting rid of some of the livestock, Dr. Dolittle, but I'm guessing that isn't an option. _________________ Jeff

Jeff,
I'm smart enough to NOT blow the air into the computer. I'm blowing the dust and hair away from the computer... give me a little benefit of the doubt here.
No, getting rid of our friends is not an option.

Didn't mean to insult your intelligence, but you didn't indicate how you were doing it. Sorry!
Are you taking the cover off and blowing the air out of the innards? _________________ Jeff

Yup! I didn't mean to imply "Oh thank God I have a Mac" - I refer to my two computers as my PC and my Mac and I'm glad I don't record on the one that had the problem - in this case the PC. Thank God though for the G4's nice one-lever opening thingy - easy to get in there.
Let that be a lesson to all of you - don't mention Mac nor PC in the same post. It's almost as bad as saying "industry standard" around here

Just don't mention "Goodyear Tires" to Tony.
