So today I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda and her lovely 2-year-old daughter.
Amanda was up here doing a gig in Schaumburg, IL where my office is. So she stopped by and her daughter and I played with blocks, drew on a Magnadoodle, named stuffed bunnies and watched a bit of "Finding Nemo" while Amanda did her v.o. work at the client's location (quite a haul from Indianapolis!)
It was great meeting you, Amanda, and I hope that your daughter thought I was a decent playmate for that hour or so

Lou,
Very cool. I too have had the delight of meeting Amanda in person, though not her daughter. _________________ Be well,

Well Amanda said there would be no actual pay, but that I would be allowed to put the experience in my babysitting portfolio, and promised that any further babysitting gigs in the area would be mine in the future.

Aww, Lou. That was very nice of your to share your toys with your young visitor! That's worth at LEAST a couple gold star stickers for you!

What a wonderful picture, and one of the best vo-bb meet-up stories I've heard! |

Oh, no, Mary, it gets better!! You were there in spirit as well! It was the product of that lead you passed me from CraigsList. While Lou and I were together, I mentioned that we needed to give you a call but somehow we got sidetracked with cookies and shoptalk. (At least it was for a good reason, right?) Sorry.
Lessons learned:
1) Lou is going to be a great daddy (SOON!)
2) There are actually some viable leads on CraigsList
3) VO gigs in Schaumburg are great if you're in Schaumburg...not Indianapolis. That's a 'fer piece' to drive for an average job.
I knew that going in, but went forward with it on the premise of future work done for them via my home studio. They were happy with my work, they were nice enough to pay me on spot, and they do have a lot more work coming their way in both English and Spanish. Looks promising!
But truth be told, it was mostly a good excuse to get outta Dodge and have a proper VO-BB meet-up. If it hadn't been for Lou's generosity, I couldn't have done it at all, though. I couldn't find good babysitting solution for Evelyn's 'late shift', but since Lou was willing to hang out with her, I just took her along! I love this job and community!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Lou.
When I got back, both my daughter and Lou were still alive and smiling. This morning all I hear is "Lou's nice. I like Lou. Lou make a tower. Lou draw a phone. Lou has candy." He definitely passed inspection!
It was quite a lovely way to spend the first day of Spring. I wouldn't have changed a thing
Amanda
P.S. Thanks Kara. I'm biased, but I think she's cute, too! _________________ Amanda Fellows

You're very welcome Amanda...I'm glad I was able to help! It really was fun. And they brought the blocks.
I did (and always do) have the candy and cookies. And a few DVDs. Uh, and some toys. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Getting a call from you and Lou would have made my day yesterday, but this story makes my day today! I'm so glad it worked out Amanda - I've heard of so many great things that have come out of associations on this board, but this was the first time I'd heard of a vo-bb-er providing child care so another member could do a gig. I just can't get over how fantastic that is!!
I definitely agree that the cost-benefit analysis on that kind of time investment goes way beyond the immediate paycheck and miles driven and gasoline spent (and spending time with Lou and his cookies and toys - priceless). Here's to a long & happy association with your new client! |
