Sure.
Every time you post stuff on the board it's always about you and how great you're doing!
Should I be writing about you and how great you're doing?
Oh, you know what I mean! All that stuff you come out with!
You didn't answer the question. Should I be writing about you and how great you're doing?
You don't know anything about me or how I'm doin' in VO, so you can't!
Would you prefer I didn't post as much or even not at all? Happy to help, just tell me.
A lot of the others feel the same, you know
That's the second time you've done that. You didn't answer my question. Would you prefer I didn't post as much or even not at all? I really am happy to help, just tell me.
Oh for **** sake that's not what I meant!
Look. You emailed me, I responded. You emailed again and I replied by picking up the phone. There's something on your mind. My shoulders are broad and I can take anything you throw at me so get it off your chest.
I'll stop quoting from the conversation now as there were insults, flashes of anger and then we got to the tears. Did I mind the poison initially being spat at me? Not a bit. Why should I get all the work, even steal jobs from under the noses of American male voices? Don't know. Why should HE be having such a hard time when I am as rich as Bill Gates' more successful brother? Don't know.
Ok Bud, what do you want me to do for you?
You just did it. You listened. Thanks Bro'
Honesty, listening and crying on someone's shoulder are dying arts. Shame, isn't it? |

Philip, I happen to LIKE your updates on what you are doing, and when I hear how well you are doing it inspires and motivates me to get off my ****and back on the phone.
That's just my two cents, for what it's worth.
There was a time in my life when I was bothered by others who were seemingly "doing better" than me in my chosen profession. Thankfully, that mindset is no longer with me.
As for your posts, KEEP 'EM COMIN' |

Me too Rob! I totally agree with what you said. ....No need to quote the whole post!
OK, then, l'll tell you all about MY GREAT week!
I got THREE NEW CLIENTS this week! (and one the week before!)
It was busy and FUN!
I am really psyched!
Thanks for letting me share!
And like Rob said, Philip: KEEP 'EM COMIN'...it keeps me motivated too!

Probably worth pointing out that anyone who genuinely believes my post was about things I've written in the past or one person's reaction to them may have picked up the dime and missed the $100 bill underneath it. |

I for one would be very dissapointed if you stopped posting.
99% of your posts are useful and there is always your humor which would be missed. Your posts are usually the ones I open first.
The fact someone feels they are losing work to you is wrong since the client is looking for your sound not theirs.
So keep posting Mr. Banks _________________ A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. |

And by the way, I'm one of the others that DOESN'T belong to the alleged "A lot"... and with that off my chest I salute you Mr. Banks! You are a true gentleman, as always. And a gifted musician as well. Thank you for letting me add some magic to your solo instrument
And by the way... A dime is enough for me, especially when it is in euros for soon that will be worth more than the $ 100 bill (hope not!) |

funny... I used to be a really good listener, some would say I still am, but with the way life has sped up over the years I got into the habit of 'speed listening' at times which meant I really wasn't listening much at all.
Didn't really realize how much I was doing that until I started taking improv classes and began to see how much I was missing because I wasn't listening.
I've been learning how to really listen again. It feels much better. |

The idea that spawned this threadleaves me feeling more than a little meh.
One should be able to enjoy talking about their work, and since we don't have a space specifically slated for bookings that folks have, I don't see an issue with it.
Seems like a non-issue to me, but what do I know? _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

It could be a case of people seeing something in this thread which isn't there. I found it particularly encouraging to discover that after a little gentle probing one of our number who has real problems felt able to really open up. What was great was that an email to me flagged up a potential problem. Either I was fast disappearing up myself or someone needed to lash out at someone, ANYONE. If I'm the problem then I'd like to think someone would be kind enough to tell me and If someone else has a problem I'd like to be able to help.
Professional pride prompts people to shout "Ok buddy so you're a lifeguard BIG DEAL!" when, as they're about to go down for the third time "Help I'm drowning" would probably be the best course of action.
For the terminally thick (intended to be light hearted remark as I don't really believe any of you are stoopid well except for No! No! Ican't )- I'll spell it out. The purpose of the thread was not about me, him or them it was about YOU. How you deal with other people, how others deal with you and about members of a community (cyber or otherwise) being there for each other in the good times and the bad.
If that ever becomes a non-issue then we're in deep sh*t.

Heh, isn't that why we're all here to begin with anyway?
I think you mis-interpreted my comment, but it's all good. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

It's fine Yoda. I just liked your expression "non-issue". Not above plagiarism. |

It's not a term paper... plagiarize away with my stuff.
I'll be honest in admitting that I'm a little jealous of several folks on this board, in an unusual way. It's not that they're not talented (they are, and deserve the kudos for that). It's that they can talk about their work. There are a few folks on here who make their mainstay on industrials and if they're doing work like me, they can't.
Just part of the way things work out, proprietary nature and all that. I'm still happy as a clam just to be asked to get in front of the onion and do what I do, when I get to do it. Would just like to be able to point it out every now and again and say that's me, lol.
One day soon, perhaps. Still puts food on the table, so it's a silly complaint. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Which is probably part of why you're all over the gear board - it's something you CAN talk about. (how's that for cheap psychoanalysis ...yeah, that and a token...)
Anyway, tho' I've never heard/seen any of your industrial stuff, I have seen you in Bob's animation workshops. You rock. |
