I just wanted to share. Most of you have seen how much I love playing with my new camera. Well, a representative of the British Red Cross contacted me about using one of my photos on their website for a flyer. The American Red Cross once helped my family in a time of need so I agreed to let them use it for free. Anyway, I thought it was cool.

Oh snap. It's a F and I use firefox's extension to view them in browser. I forget not everybody does.
Oh well. Brief description. It's a one sheet on how to set up a karoke fund raiser and they used this image:

Dear Mr. Hart,
I own my own camera and my friends and family tell me I take pretty snappy photos. I think I want to give photographing a try so I can make sacks of money. Could you tell me the best way to get into the camera photographing biz?
Thanks bud!
p.s. I saw the pdf file just fine, thanks! _________________ Greg Littlefield

Ha. They found that photo on my Flickr page. When I figure out how to get those sacks with my camera you'll be the first to know.
I had to think about it some before letting them use it. If I posted this on a photography site I'd get blasted for giving work away for free (sound familiar? - I assume your post was tongue in cheek for this reason). So I thought about it over my morning coffee and in the end decided to let them use it because the Red Cross had touched my family before. It's a small token, but an important one to me. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

No, if I was going to bust your stones for giving photos away, I would have emulated someone else and not a n00b.
Nice work! I've enjoyed the stuff you've shared. You have a good eye. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Gorgeous photo Brian!
FYI- I was thinking of you yesterday. My husband gave me a Nikon D60 for our 2nd anniversary (uh yeah, my husband RULES!). I'm having a VERY difficult time working today...I wanna play with my new camera and I have to edit and record and edit and produce and edit. Waaahhh....
Good thing I love my job! Hah!
Edit: My avatar is a photo I snapped last night with it...clearly I have a long ways to go before I'm at your published level! But, it ain't bad being just an hour out of the box! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

I just like taking photos of my flowers and animals The camera is SO great! I've wanted one for a while- and seeing your photos made me REALLY want one! I can't wait to start playing with it. It will take me a while to learn all the features.
I'm excited one of your photos was published! That is a really big deal! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Heya!
Love the picture!
From my perspective, I have a lot less issue with providing a service (VO, photography, graphic design, etc) for free or at a discounted rate to non-profit groups than I do with providing them to big companies who play the "exposure" card in place of acceptable compensation.
I know non-profits also have budgets for this kind of thing, but I feel like at least the money they're saving on my services might actually be going towards something worthwhile vs. just lining the pockets of some corporation that surely has enough money to pay me a fair rate (and isn't going to otherwise use it to help victims of Katrina or save endangered owls). A lot of my design/photo friends operate this way as well, and I think deciding for yourself to provide free or reduced services to non-profits does far less to undercut the market than those aforementioned greedy companies that end up forcing talents to lowball one another or trying to make them feel lucky for the "opportunity" to work for free. Actually a number of the design/photo people I know will actually charge their corporate clients as much as they possibly can so that they can afford to take on the non-profit stuff at a reduced rate.
Anyway, that's just my two cents! |

Nice pic of the SM58. I must say, you should let it dry off totally before snapping pictures of it toweling off right out of the shower, Brian.
I have a Nikon D70. Loads of fun, when I remember to get it out of the case and take some pictures. Here are some more from my wife and I's "bucketlist" trip to the Grand Canyon. We did the flight over and a boat ride through the canyon. Glad I brought along the clunky camera. It takes better pictures than the point and shoot any day...even when shooting pics out a small plane window.
Here are two from me:
