I'm in the process of putting together my first narration demo and need a little guidance. I've assembled a rough draft, one which I know is probably too long with too many cuts, but that's why I'm asking for help. Smile

I'd like to know which cuts you think I should include and whether the cuts themselves are the proper length, or whether I should simply scrap it and start from scratch. Thanks for your time and help!

Hi Chris!

Hey-you're my first critique on this forum!! Wink

First of all, you have a great read! Full of personality, and very "in" with today's narration market.

Yes, it's too long. But you have so much to work with, I really think no matter what you cut/keep you will have a rockin demo. Cut it to a minute. Keep what YOU feel best represents you. There ain't a bad cut on it! You can always add/replace as time goes on. But what you have to work with is great! I could absolutely hear you on HGTV, Food Network, E!, etc!

Good work!

Wow— narration demos are limited to a minute, too?

That's good to know! I had always figured there was more leeway because you want to clearly show the different styles that you can present.

6 Segments of 10 seconds, then?
Something like that?

Oh boy— I've got homework!

What about making more demos but being specific to subject? That way you can do less sessions of longer length. For example:

Narrtion Demos
Medical
Biographical
Documentary
Etc... or whatever it is that you do in long form. That makes it easier for the voice seeker too. Then you can do several different examples of each. Rather than limit it to 10 sec blurbs.
Well it's a thought.
To do it on your website you could have them as buttons that pop up when you click on the narration button,

Well, when you consider the average listener, be that an agent or buyer, will usually give the demo a 4 second listen, less is best. If they don't love you in 4 seconds they won't love you in 4 minutes.

All said, I can only give advice based on the LA market. Other markets might prefer longer demos. There's an agency out here that prefers 30 second demos.

As for how many segments/length of the segments? There's no formula. It all depends on you, your producer, the copy you read, etc. Never go formulaic when it comes to a demo. Every demo should be as individual and unique as the actor recording it. But all can be accomplished in one minute.

Animation demos can be a tad longer. You need to establish character, acting, etc. I'd say a minute and a half for animation.

Well I am honored to be your first critique on this board*, Bob!

* there are other boards?

Wow! Thank you for listening and for the words of encouragement! I was a little worried about whether I was on the right track since narrations are still pretty new to me. Count me as another one who didn't realize a narration demo needed to be in the 60-second range... I'll definitely keep that in mind as I pare this down from "rough draft" form.

Thank you again!
