Yesterday a regular client got in touch regarding a new job. After many phone calls, emails, example recording from them to me the script arrived at around 2pm today. It took me 45 minutes to record 15 minutes of corporate/MBA nonsense. It needed to be animated in parts, corporate in parts and anomated at the end. What I sent they didn't like, what I did was wrong, not as requested, not as directed, not what the client was used to hearing. Would I do it again? Was I prepared to guess again? No. My first suggestion was for them to get to an ISDN studio with the client and direct me. No, wouldn't do that. My second suggestion was to get me on a phone patch and direct me. No, wouldn't do that. Could I record again listening to the guide track and do it line by line? So, I record again and may be guess wrong...again? No, I wouldn't do that.

Long discussion, frank discussion. I suggested they may like to find someone else as I honestly didn't think I could help them. They said they'd talk it over amongst themselves. A phone call from me to the production manager about 40 minutes later resulted her in telling me they were going to use someone else. They're up against it in terms of deadline and were potentially over budget. I told the production manager that I would not be charging for the time I'd spent on their project.

Nice people, nice work but sometimes you really do have to say "Sorry I can't help you". Life really is too short.

SPINE ON!!!

As usual, you have my respect in this matter, and most likely handled it far more courteously than I would have.

/Mr. Greg has a short temper for corporate BS... deals with it too often.

Greg,

My initials are B.S. and I work for a corporation.

/sorry for the threadjack

Philip, as Greg said, I think you handled that about as well as possible. And you're right, sometimes you just have to walk away and not worry about it.

Bob, this reminds me of a picture I saw a few years back.

It was of my father, when he was first starting out in his career. He was giving a presentation at a conference of some importance (I don't remember which one... he got around a lot until about 5 years back). What I do remember is that they put his credentials behind his name and projected it onto the screen behind him.

At the time he had a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

So, his name followed by "BS Me".

It was a source of amusement for many a day in our household. Dad didn't have as much of a sense of humor about it...

/quoted us the knowledge and skill requried to be an engineer
//younger brother said "so long as the trains are on the track, and on time, who cares?"
///younger brother isn't that smart... works as an exec for Goldman Sachs now Rolls Eyes

Minor BS Thread jack.

Most colleges and universities give Bachelor of Arts degrees for theater I guess, but I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Two of my brothers are engineers and one brother is a lawyer. They all find amusement in the fact that I have a BS Degree in Theater "Rather redundant, isn't it?" they say.
