Had a couple of things waiting for me in my e-mail tonight. my wife was putting the newborn to sleep, i was puting the other to sleep after a bath, and figured i'd just bang them out afterwards.
well the newborn just didn't want to fall asleep... and after giving mom a hard time, i was called up to pinch rock. got him to fall asleep, but of course the second i put him down in his crib he's wide awake. rock him to sleep again, put him down, wide awake. he's not hungry... it's been only an hour since his last bottle. i was really hoping to get to these scripts tonight (one less thing tomorrow). so what do i do? bring him downstairs, and voice the scripts while holding him in my arms. (he's not too keen on his swing when he's this cranky.) and while recording he falls asleep (guess the copy wasn't too interesting). finished, put him in the crib, stays asleep.
now i can catch up on a couple of shows on my DVR.
think maybe i'll try this again next time he's fussy at night. _________________ Jim Feldman

I remember reading that when babies/toddlers fall asleep in the car, it's best to wait 20 minutes before moving them. I always found that to be true - after 20 minutes they would stay asleep. This may apply to other methods of sleep induction too |

So your saying that the sound of your voice put your son to sleep. Hey, whatever works.
When my daughter was about a month old I started bringing her to my singing lessons. I put her in her chair on the top of the baby grand and she loved it. She'd sit there smiling and gooing and cooing. She now has perfect pitch.

When our youngest was a little guy (he graduated high school last Saturday), the easiest way to get him to sleep was to drive him around for a few minutes. He'd be out in a matter of minutes. We did have to be driving, though. Just putting him in the car wasn't enough. Guess he showed us who was boss, eh? |

Don,
I had the same experience with my oldest (and only daughter), who graduated college last December. Driving around in the car was the only thing that would put her to sleep many, many times. For whatever reason, our 3 boys were easier to get to sleep in the years that followed. _________________ Be well,

Between the ages of 2 and 3, when they still needed to nap but didn't think they did, my kids always succumbed to and even requested "a soothing drive" at naptime.
Glad that's over with - too expensive these days, as well as non-green... |

we had a slightly less expensive method of doing the same thing. securing the little one in the carseat, we set her on top of the clothes dryer for a few minutes (not leaving her there, of course). the vibration and sound helped her get to sleep, and we got some laundry done while watching her.
later we found a gizmo that attached to the crib which created a gentle vibration. it even came with a little box that generated "white noise" which blocked out a lot of distractions. come to think of it...i think i swiped that white noise box a few times for naps of my own.
welcome to the grand adventure of parenthood. _________________ rowell gormon

Yeeaaayyaaahh to the car thing. Worked every time.
When I was a kid it was Mom's vacuum cleaner or the floor fan. My son and I both now sleep with a floor fan year-round. Drives our wives crazy. Life is good.
btw, don't blink...those years really do fly by.

Yes, definitely always looking for sleep inducements!
He sleeps fine at night...during the day, he just doesn't seem to want to sleep much.
