With reverence, respect and humility I offer this Point of Privilege:
While I am a Vietnam Era Veteran, and while it is vitally important to support our men and women who go in harms way, it is likewise equally important to remember those who have gone before. They laid the solid foundation that supports our rights, freedoms and liberties. They have on every occasion answered the call to defend.
On a special point of family pride, I would like to honor my Great, Great, Great… Uncle Martin Gambill of NC. The following speaks to the fact:
In 1775 a Boston silversmith named Paul Revere made a night ride of about two miles to warn other Patriots that the British were coming and, with the aid of a poet named Longfellow, he also rode into the pages of history. In 1780, Martin Gambill, a pioneer settler of the upper New River Valley, made a ride of over one hundred miles for the same purpose, but there was no Longfellow around to immortalize him in poetry. (author unknown)
This ride is properly credited with setting into action a chain of events that lead to the surrender of the British army to General Washington at York Town. If you like Revolution Era history read the full document here, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tmetrvlr/bio9.html
