Phone patch: you record on your end while they listen on the phone. You send them the file(s) when done.
ISDN: In a nutshell, you patch into their system and they record on their end,

And yes, it's possible to run a VO business without ISDN. I do it and lots of others do it.

Without ISDN, you're probably missing out on some big name clients. But the question is, even with ISDN, would you be able land those clients?

Jeff is correct.

Nobody should purchase an ISDN codec unless they have the requirement to use it REGULARLY. I got by just fine without ISDN for decades until a large client required ISDN sessions several times a day... Obviously it became a mandatory investment at that juncture. Once I picked it up 4.5 years ago, other sessions have cropped up that required the use of one, so it's all good. But I suspect that many of those sessions could have been done as a phone patch had that been my only option.

Happily, the Zephyr Xstream also doubles as a first class phone patch device as well, so it pulls double duty around here.

Well said Jeff and Jeff. Very true indeed. You'll know if ISDN is a must by what your clients and agents are asking for from you. If you have nobody asking you for ISDN sessions at the present, nothing much will change once you get the lines up and running.

Too many people think that once they throw the switch on the ISDN line that the new clients will be lining up and knocking on their door (codec). If they were knocking before you had ISDN.....getting it will just allow you to open the door a little easier for them. It should be something that you do to make it easier on your clients that HAVE the ISDN and would be able to use you more and more efficiently with it.

I hear so many people that want to get ISDN that think most or all of the small production houses use ISDN. The truth is....many do not even know what it is. Some do...but of the smaller production houses, it is not a cost they want to carry per month.

It's already been said but I'll share my love of phone patch, which I now use often and clients appreciate. I use the THAT-2 and love it. It allows me to load files into clients systems, too. It takes some time to play with and get it right but is tons of fun.

Good luck!
