OMG, Rowell...what a nightmare! You were generous to a fault, and then generously faulty, which is better than I would have been in the same situation!
However...if you go to eat in his restaurant, be sure he's not ever left alone with your food... |

I left you my comment on your blog. That's just plain ridiculous. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Rowell,
People skills also include being patient with those who do not deserve your time. You have good people skills.

i've been so spoiled with people answering my questions so generously over the years, and others being so appreciative when i've been able to help them...i forget about the "dark side".
thank goodness (and D for a place like this to provide some soothing relief.
you know, i almost posted this same thing on a couple of other sites, but wondered if i'd get responses like, "so, dude, what was YOUR problem?????"
at the risk of over-stating the obvious: what a blessing you all are. _________________ rowell gormon

"Well, either ya got it or you don't" Thanks. Now the sweet smell of fine Kentucky Bourbon adorns my screen.
He don't get it, do he?
I'll refer him to the auto client I had today. We spent the entire afternoon working on two spots simply because he had issues with how I said "Grand Vitara".
First, he wanted it done in the smooth style I have in my demo for BMW. I mentioned in passing that I had maybe 20 seconds of total copy for that thirty, and I had plenty of "smooth" wiggle room. But it cut no muster. We were gonna cram 45 seconds of copy into 28 come hell or high water. Thank God I didn't have to babble a disclaimer at the end.
We finally got it. But NEVER did the client even begin to sense I was pullin' my hair out on the other end.
Yep send me yer, "Caller" I have a client for him. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

All I can say is wow as well. I can't believe how patient you are. I'd have given him "what for" after the second stupid comment. I think I could have lasted that long. |

well, i have been actively trying to learn how to be better at this business during the past year...even though i've been at it more than 30.
there's been blogging 101 with bob souer, marketing 101 with audio o'connell, and trying to let nancy wolfson re-tool my braintracks. but the lesson i've learned with this episode has been one of the hardest so far.
and while i can't say i'd ever want to lose another whole day getting over the taste of one "bad apple", i gratefully acknowledge the support of this bunch...who've not only "got it"...but "get it". _________________ rowell gormon

Rowell,
I tried to leave a comment on your blog, but it wouldn't let me... so I'll just copy/paste my thoughts here.
-----------------
Just. Wow. That is funny in a very sad way. I think you handled that well. Even the petty shot seems quite understandable - and tame compared to what I would have said.
If you recall, one day ~3-4 years ago, you received a call from me (through a referral from a "studio") asking for your help with getting started in VO. I remember being in my car and then pulling into a nearby parking lot to finish the conversation. Your assistance was geniune and so was my desire to learn. I certainly hope you weren't secretly thinking similar thoughts then as you were with this recent situation...
Judging by the fact that we're still friends and have worked together, I'll assume not. The knowledge you passed to me then was invaluable, as is your friendship now. Here's to hoping the next call for advice is from less of a doo-doo head. (Can you say that on the Internet?) _________________ Donovan

thanks, donovan
don't understand what happened on the blogpage, but thank you for taking the trouble to post it here.
i've never regretted your call. you took what i had to offer and ran with it, and i hope to follow the example of your determination and progress in self-promotion.
call anytime...for any reason (and i'll see if mr. souer can help figure out why wordpress treated you so shabbily). _________________ rowell gormon

I read this last night and am still stewing over it for you so now it's time I let it go! It's always tough to have an interaction like that. You're a good man for trying your best with him, though, and in the end can certainly hold your head up for being professional. Plus, you're the one doing vo and, as you said, he's just a guy in a restaurant (ok, paraphrasing, but you know what I mean!).
Cheers and namaste. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
