Have you heard about this? I am slow to enrage, but this sets me simmering.

There is a lot of anti-baby-boomer generation rhetoric out there. Some quite vitriolic. Some just plain stupid. Some downright sick.

In the LA Times op-ed section, a gen X-er ranted on us boomers with a piece entitiled "The Millstone of Boomer Milestones: Enough with the 1968 Nostalgia; It's Time for Boomers to Stifle Themselves."

There is also a website so delightfully named "diebooomerdie" -- talk about what's worst about the internet.

Well, ageism is nothing new. Hatred is nothing new. I guess it was inevitable.

Generational failings aside, let's focus on the positive ... what do you think were/are the greatest contributions of the Boomer generation?

It's merely their version of 'Never trust anyone over 30'....each generation feels the need to seperate and rise above its predecessors. It's just that - speaking in very general terms - this generation is much more uncouth and whiney than Boomers ever thought of being. And speaking as a mother of a 21 year old -they are pretty damn big for their britches considering how many of them still live at home...being fed and sheltered by those whom are the target of their anger and angst. Hm....it's starting to make more sense now.... Get Lost

Yet, there have been these divisions encouraged by politicians that are worse than anything I remember in the late 60s and early 70s... the kids today are heirs to some pretty nasty partisan crap from practitioners who have risen from sludge mostly over the past 10 years or so to cast a lot of mud on the body politic in the U.S. I'm tired of the divisive tactics, no matter what side they represent. This isn't political -- it's a plea for civility and manners -- something it seems to me went the way of the dodo the past 20 years or so...

As to the question, what have boomers contributed? Well, I look at my older boomer uncle who fought in Viet Nam... and my friends who did the same... and the boomer women who fought to make life a little easier for their daughters when it comes to jobs, opportunities, etc.

I fight daily not to think and talk like an old fart as I cruise through middle age. I reserve comment on today's music, clothing and hair most of the time as I remember how foolish my parents' generation sounded when criticizing my generation's fads. I held my tongue fairly well while on a five day visit with my 14 year old niece as she spent 80% of our time together with her face and thumbs glued to her cell phone texting about nothing instead of interacting.

Rebellion will always be a part of youth...no one likes "the Man" keeping us down, whether real or perceived, and as long as they don't come after us looking for soylent green we'll probably survive it.

Oh, and politics used to be much worse. Our earliest presidential candidates just made awful stuff up about the other guy and blasted them repeatedly in the papers. Sexual and financial scandals! Allegiances with the Devil himself! And no effective press to corroborate. Yes, things have gotten more divisive ever since the relatively civil calm of the pre-Nixon decades, but thank goodness for all the truth-seekers on the Internet (along with the scare mongers) so we at least have a fighting chance of finding the real story.

In essence the youth and politicians are singing the same old song they've always sung, it's just gone from electrified to widely digitized which makes it seem so much louder and grungier.

As a boomer... I say, "Let them whine."
I have yet to see a generation that has successfully cheated death. Let the whiners beware... What goes around, comes around.

I merely think about the pants below the crack, the near-impossibility and complete impracticality of walking in clothing worn like that--akin to wearing your socks outside your shoes--and realize I'm a wee bit smarter than a lot of X-ers.

Like, whatever.

Sounds like today... but what I really want to know is:

You remember that far back??

(sorry, I couldn't resist)

Old age and treachery will beat youth and skill, every time.

Yes, I can understand the digs from youth -- but what makes this particularly insidious is that some folks OLDER than us are also throwing punches.

To hell with them all.

It's aggressive ignorance, and there's just not a lot you can do about it.

"aggressive ignorance" WOW, I WISH I'D THOUGHT OF THAT ONE!

if you want a perfect example, check the latest bit of self-therapy on my clogged blog that condenses a week's worth of emails with someone of that description (to be fair, he said he was 50, so no young punk analogies apply).

To quote President Reagan ( a bit out of context); ""I will not make age an issue ..."

I remember (echoes - remember, remember...) when as a young pup I thought anyone older than my parents were "not with it". Now I am happy to be middle age with a middle age spread and remain comfortable in who I am and what I do.

I have learned I do not know everything, I have forgotten more than most of the Gen X'rs have just been taught. So I leave this post to those who feel the discrimination of being young; one parting thought: "Let the youth battle for the world while they still know everything".

Toodles
