Some sources trace the phrase as originating from the Brylcreem advertising jingle motto "A Little Dab'll Do Ya!" back in the late 1920s.

Bob Bergen's version of the story (relating to when Alan Reed first used it for the show) is much more amusing (and most likely, true).
