Here's my stock answer:
Advice to a VO Hopeful

I would be remiss if I did not try to disabuse you of the notion of considering this path. This a one helluva long row to hoe, and sometimes, in spite of a load of work , the yield is quite small. 15 years ago I set the wheels in motion, and I still have to get out and push now and then.
--and those 12 years had a life-long base of drama, improv, and other types of performance.

What I'm trying to tell you is that I still have to work my ass off-- and I have been doing something like VO or Radio of some kind of performance-related thing all my life.

My advice to you is to read aloud every day.
Start with that.
Then, get a tape recorder (or some kind of recording device)and record yourself. Listen back. Get used to your own voice. If you want to, you can start with the tape recorder, but some people get too nervous and then don't practice.
If you want to do any kind of VO, you must first become intimate with the sound of your voice. What you hear from the tape player is what other people hear. Get used to it, embrace it.

If you can read aloud every day for a month, you've got the guts and determination to do something.

Also—Find an acting class. Stage acting helps you develop your voice, character and style.

There are so many resources! Get ahold of James Alburger's The Art of Voice Acting.

Listen to and practice with Pat Fraley's CDs:

The character ones are fab because they make it fun to practice.

Lurk a while. Read through the archives.

All the best to you!

Honest-to-God tonite I wrote the following blog entry:

http://www.courvo.biz/2008/08/newbie-resources.html

then traipsed on over to the VO-BB to find this thread that Jeff started.

Now I can add this thread to my list of resources.

There truly is something in the air right now.

(de-lurking)

As a newbie, I thank all of you for the info.

Dave--thanks for the resource list. Between that, the list from Voices.com, and e-newsletters I get from Bob Fraser and from Actors Ink, I think I have a good starting point.

Just got another one so I had to come back here to do a little borrowing. This guy has tons of non-paid experience, though, and has done lots of workshops so there is hope, ladies and gentlemen. It is refreshing.

I think this would be me. Hi Mandy! Thanks for the tip in the right direction.

As for there something being in the air? Maybe. I've had this in my air for the past 3 years or so, mostly spent taking classes and workshops. Only since this April have I actually gone out to do something about it and scored the slew of non-paying audio drama gigs.

Now to hit the links, PDFs, and webpages to find out how to jump to the paying gigs.

Again, thanks to all.

Abner,

I wish you the very best in your pursuits. If things go well, you'll discover that voiceover is much better than working for a living. If they don't, you'll discover something else that is.

Who needs to go to a pricey seminar or conference, it is all right here. Thanks vo-bb!!! We should put it all in a book and sell it like the coaches do. Any one know a good publisher?? It's only just $19.95 and if you act now we will throw in the CD version with the vocies of the vo-bb, but wait, that's not all...

As an added bonus we'll throw in a free 3 month membership to the vo-bb.
