I rarely get "shocked" by anything, but news of his passing hit me in the chest like a wrecking ball. I never met the man, but I'm a long-time fan and admirer. And I feel like I lost a good friend.

It sounds trite and cliche to say he will be missed. That's like the understatement of a lifetime.

My heart and thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends.

It's kind of funny, but I got several calls and emails from people today telling me about Don's passing. It was as if they all knew instinctively that one of our immortal icons had moved on to his great reward. I wish I would have gotten the chance to meet the man, He was a living inspiration, and now will live on in each of us as we move forward. My thoughts and prayers to his wife, children, and relatives and friends.

I'm having a hard time believing this is actually true . . . like maybe if I don't believe it, it won't be.

This news is just so, so sad. Still can't quite accept that we have lost one of our "greats" . . . and if I feel this way never having met Don face to face, I can only imagine what his friends and family are experiencing right now. I will be lifting them up in prayer in the days to come.

He will be missed, but the legend will live on to all who honor him.

Matt,

the same thing happened here -- several folks sent me emails and links to various videos of Don's work...

One of our old friends from the Colorado studio days who has since retired and does VO from his "retirement studio" used to tell us about meeting Don at meetings and how in awe of him he was. That was the first time I ever heard of Don, even though I'd heard his voice for years.

Sad, sad loss...

I'm with you Rachel...

I never met Don, but we all felt like we knew him. I just can't believe this happened.

Just thought I'd share a recent trailer of DLF's. It reminds me of his earlier work... along the lines of his Elephant Man trailer in terms of just simply... speaking to us.

PEACE.

Anthony - love that trailer!

Since I heard the news, I've been thinking about the reasons why Don was as great as he was. Yes, talent. But it was a lot more than that. I jotted down a few things on my blog. If you can think of more, and I'm sure there are, feel free to add to it.

Just click.

Steve Stone emailed me a link to a video of Don working in the mid-90s that's now available on the CNN web site.

I don't think I've ever seen him with hair. Thanks for the link and the smile for today Bob.

He was a machine in the studio wasn't he! Ripping off take after take...what an absolute pro's pro. Brian...I think he had hair in the "limo" bit too. He's one of those lucky guys that actually looks better bald!

It's good we're all remembering him like this.

I've never seen him without hair either (let alone met him). He will definitely be missed.

As are the rest of you, I'm just stunned by his passing. Have spent a lot of time today reading your blogs, and you've all done a great job in honoring a great talent. Thank you for sharing what Don meant to you. I also wrote a little about him to the non-VO's of the world who read my blog, and an old friend from Washington DC radio days posted his memories of working with Don here http://www.frankmurphy.com/2008/09/in-world.html

RIP, Don...and READ!! Heaven has got to sound a lot better today.

Sandy,

Thank you for that link to Frank Murphy's piece. I've added it to my tribute collection post on my blog, along with a link to your piece as well.
