a client (a local historical site) wants to implement a system that we are all familiar with - i.e. - you push a button in front of a display and some one (me) tells you a bit about the exhibit. the question posed to me was: "how?" what is the technology involved? it seems pretty simple, and given some time i could probably figure something out .... BUT since there is PROBABLY somebody here with experience in that area, i thought i'd ask.

is there a "standard" for such things?
off the shelf devices?

thanks.

Hey Todd,

I did similar stuff for the zoo in Amsterdam. I had to just deliver high quality audio files that they would then convert into solid state chips that replay the audio from the push of a button. I was told it is the same technology as those postcards with built-in chips that can hold some audio and play it back with tiny little flat speakers (transducers).

it's the "box", for lack of a better term, that they could mount to the display onto which they would load the audio, that i'm looking for.

Nice Vacation reference.

I have no idea but I suspect a company like one of these might be able to point you in the right direction:

http://www.identityaudio.com/

http://www.alcorn.com/products/index.html

http://www.dakotaaudio.com/

Here's a directory of vendors that looks promising.

Todd, I'm sorry... English is not my native language, and I probably totally missed the point. I just e-mailed my client I did the zoo VO's for, maybe he'll come up with an answer as to which systems they use.

EDIT: THAT WAS FAST!!!! This is what they use: http://www.stoplisten.com/index.html

jacking my own thread:

one fall we had two punkins taken from our front porch and smashed in the driveway - no biggie - two more punkins set out ... this time after they had been carefully carved by boy #1, boy #2 and pop. these punkins were also smashed the next morning.

now i'm mad.

i made a punkin alarm consisting of a normally closed switch, two 1,000 watt halogen work lamps and a car alarm. when said neighbor kids picked up the punkin on came the lights & the alarm. scared the crap outta them ... and i never had trouble again.

my 2nd line of defense? a fist full of capacitors - poked through the punkin so that it looked like pinhead - then charged to full - grab the punkin and POP!

ahhh, fall fun.

I'd vote for that on "America's Funniest Home Videos"
