I'm working on a guided discussion class on how to motivate for a class I'm teaching/coaching/leading/mentoring with my good friend of mine. Here is our motivation...behind the motivation:
Our career field, Broadcast Journalist merged with two other career fields: Videography and Graphics. For the first time, there is a possibility our co-workers may or may not want to be apart of this new job. Additionally, there are many perceptions, desires, work-flow issues, fears...that could affect the work climate. The bottom line there are folks at every echelon who may or may not want to be doing what they're slated to do. This is a challenge.
I ask you...my friends, champions of truth, knowledgable sages for help. What topics should we make sure we discuss? How do we capture the need for supervisors to make sure everyone is on-board? How do we mentor the supervisor who doesn't believe? How do we mentor the worker who doesn't believe? _________________ Kasbah

I suppose one way would be to discuss with people who consider themselves communicators if they should use every means at their disposal to communicate with the audience or whether they have the right to choose only the means that suits them. To be blunt you are working with serving members of the US military and on the front line the audience facing you chooses a gun to communicate their thoughts and feelings; to effectively get your feelings across to them you may prefer a Sony Camcorder but my guess is that most would choose some sort of firearm. Enemy or friendly it's always about their agenda not your colleagues. |

I second Philip on the: they're all forms of communication line. I've worked in all of the media at one time or another: radio, TV, film, theater, journalism, Internet, books, magazines, plus the graphics that are included or support each of those. They can be very interdependent and I've found it extremely valuable to be fairly knowledgeable in all of them. To get a message across you often need to use multiple media and a coordinated presentation works best.
And there are motivations your organization has that others don't, "Get enthusiastic Mister, or you'll be spending winter in the Aleutians, or summer in Sadr City!"

i was part of a group recently that had to turn in a "commitment statement" - however - it didn't have to be a "12pt. times new roman" document. it could be a picture, a graphic image, a pie chart, sculpture - whatever. you could see a lot about what motivated people in the medium they chose to express their value ... which, as i think about it, is kinda like what bruce said. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

live-fire exercises always seemed to motivate us. There's nothing quite like the knowledge that if you screw up, you or someone else could die.
Wait, this is for people who need motivation related to communication?
Nevermind. Just bring some booze and pizza. Always seems to work in the studios I'm at. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
