|
|
for a session on Monday, I need to try to match some voicing I did earlier this year on a U87ai (which I no longer have!)
Which of the following do you think comes closest? Keep in mind, I'm not saying that either is dead-on, because there nothing else is a U87, but which is closer, to your way of hearing. Thanks!

For my fellow gear addicts, I will reveal the mics' identities before this thread dies! |

Can you give us an equal amount of dry U87. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

that's a good idea, Ed. I'll see if I have anything....
Mainly just looking for those with "87" ears and which one, after a cursory listen, sounds more "87"-ish. |

They should make either of those match your old signal chain fine. 2 is probably closer. Don't sweat it. You should be worrying about matching your old read more than the gear matching. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Okay, session complete. Thanks for the input!
Anybody want to guess as to the mics' identities before this thread self-destructs? |

Hey Rob,
they both sound good...let's guess that #1 is the AKG 414 B ULS and that #2 is the RE20. You sound good on both, and #1 is probably the best match for the u87. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Well, actually I sold the RE 20 several weeks ago...(.BTW they hold their value well on ebay!)
#1 is not the AKG 414. I do have a 414 B ULS, but it has a capsule upgrade---the 414 TL II capsule....
And I ended up going with Mic#2 for the session. Both mics to my ear, in their own respective ways, exude some 87ishness...though neither one completely.
I'm afraid to say it, but I think I finally have my settled on my mic closet, after a 2-year run of mic buying and selling! |

Okay, I'll end the suspense since all of you are waiting impatiently.....
(SFX: sounds of crickets chirping at night)
Mic #1=Gefell M930
Mic#2=AKG 414 w/ TL II capsule |

That MG sounds great on you. The 414 is decent too, but the 930 really shines. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Honestly Rob, I'd much rather hear you again, but this time reading a few different styles of scripts rather than just talking. I think that is a better way to evaluate a mic.
...although I really like the M930 on my own voice. _________________ Best regards,
