No, not Voice2008 - Vox2008
9.30am on Saturday I headed south to Aberdeen airport to fly down to Birmingham, from there it would be a short drive to Hinckley for Vox2008, a meeting of producers, copywriters and Voice Overs.
A little 10 years ago the market for radio commercials changed, as opposed to one voice over arriving at a radio station to record a pile of radio commercial scripts it became ISDN dependent. No longer were voices doing 1 session of 10 scripts per day for one station, they were now doing sessions of 1 script per day for 10 stations. No more travelling meant no more face to face. We need to keep contact, but how? Easy, hire a hotel, arrange a dinner/dance and anyone who wants to come will be made most welcome.
What happens? 234 hours of lectures and seminars? NO!!!!!!!!
2pm Check in Location: Reception
Collect your name badge and goodie bag from the VOX 2008 Welcome Desk.
You can try checking in earlier, but rooms are only guaranteed to be available from 2pm.
You can register a credit card to have extras charged to your account.
Leisure facilities include: indoor pool, sauna, solarium, steam room and fitness suite.
3pm Voice over demo desks Location: The Rotunda
Voices can use the desks in The Rotunda to showcase their demo reels They’ll remain
on display throughout VOX for producers to browse and select reels of their choice.
4pm ‘Speed Networking’ Location: The Rotunda
Sponsored and organised by Voiceovers.co.uk. This is a fantastic way for producers and voices to widen their range of contacts. There’s even a substantial, premium alcoholic incentive for every producer taking part. Complete the attached booking form and be there.
7pm Drinks Reception & VOX Awards Location: The Rotunda
The winners of the 2007 VOX Awards will be presented with their awards at the
pre-dinner drinks reception. The bar will be open throughout.
8pm Wine and Dine Location: The Paris Suite
After a Gala dinner, this year’s evening entertainment is, once again, entirely down to you! Guests will be joining our house band in the VOX Jam-boree. Wine and water at tables is generously sponsored by Trish Jarman, Sarah Parnell, Kate Parker, Sally Bosley, Charles Foster, Julie Berry and SpeakEasy Ltd. Balloons sponsored by Sayer Hamilton. Band and stage design sponsored by Jon Strickland, Jonathan Clays & Marian Kemmer. The late disco is courtesy of Chris Dannatt & Groove Travelling Discotheques
Late/Early Après VOX Location: The Triumph Bar
The hotel’s residents bar will be open until breakfast.
7am-11am Breakfast Location: The Brasserie
If you can’t face the public ridicule you can always order breakfast in bed by filling in a card the night before. This is subject to a small service charge. And the humiliation, of course.
11am Checkout
I enjoyed the whole thing. Testimony to the state of radio commercials that the goodie bags had few goodies but a few VO's asked if Vox would put copies of their unpaid electricity bills or photo's of their starving children stapled to a business card.
We got up around 10am for breakfast and then decided to spent a couple of hours in the leisure part of the hotel so had a swim, sauna, Jacuzzi then it was off to a local pub for Sunday lunch. Flight back and drive home was uneventful.
Mostly it was about PEOPLE, spending time with friends.
The faces you don't know are - Andrew Blackwell and James Cameron(Producer/Directors/Drunks), Jenny Dunbar (elderly woman), Mr & Mrs Monteath (Status unknown), Elisa Canas (the OTHER woman), Dave Gregory (former DJ on Britains No1 radio station and now a blackmail photographer)

Philip,
I say, you and David both shine up very nicely. (And having seen your smile in person, I was not surprised in the least by that facial expression.) The shock for me was seeing you in a suit and tie. _________________ Be well,

Unfortunately I couldn't make it this year, it's a shame, it looks like you've had a great time! Nice pictures!
I did however put my business cards in the goodie bags and it was well worth it, I've already been contacted by a few production companies (I thought I'd mention it for those who don't know that they can do that.) _________________ www.clairedodin.com |
