Recently, I offered advice to a friend who will fill in on occasion as afternoon host and news reader at a local NPR affiliate. While she thinks I don't like the sound of anyone local, it's more that I'm picky. I hear the sing-songy delivery and can almost certainly tell when a person is wrapped up in the sound of his voice instead of reading the news and/or being natural. You know--when the emPHASis is on the wrong syLLABle.

This was in today's funnies, which sums it up:

My recent take on it was to explain to a student that it's not about making the words sound nice.

Like in any art, you need to consider the whole composition.

Perhaps we could compare using the Japanese "Tsukiyama" approach to speaking, when doing voice overs. If you think about it you'll get the connection.

Post -it note 1 - It's not about me
Post-it note 2 - Hey! Get over yourself

Start a thread on this or any other voice over board about the best mic, preamp, vocal booth or anything to get those great pipe even more greaterer and you'll be beating posters off with a stick. Whereas if you start a thread about performance skills 5 responses is good going.

Most voices need to move from great pipes to appropriate mood - Get that and 'pon the very day the it becomes a part of your soul your fortunes will sore beyond the clouds giving leave for thine heart to whisper earthly secrets unto the bosum of the stars.

It's like telling someone who's gorgeous to stop looking at her/himself in the mirror, and to pay attention to his/her dinner date. As Benjamin Franklin said, "He who is in love with himself will have no rivals."

Very true.

It's easier to talk about mics, preamps, etc... harder to quantify performance skills for each person. We all come to them through different routes, and as one colleague once said, through different ways of implementing the same artifices to effect a true performance.

Put all of us in a room and give us the assignment of voicing a character that is sympathetic in hospital VO, for example. We will each come to that sympathy through some inner route, and no two inner routes may be exactly the same. It's bringing the personal to our work and may be hard to describe.

It's acting - where you really are inside the words - reacting - emoting - believing. It's not reading.

The hardest part for many is hearing the difference in the first place - first in other people - listening for those who bring out the story - and then listening for it in yourself.

And some scripts are much harder than others to find the story. So we have to work even harder. Sometimes I get it right the first time. Sometimes I have to dig and think and uncover. Sometimes I just never find it.

The less I feel like I'm here (self-awareness) the more the story is there.

It drives me nuts when I hear people read and emphasize either all the nouns or all the verbs as a habit (speaking of NPR).

Just because you say "The VILLAGE was burned down by the ARMY" doesn't convey the meaning at all, and just because you have a fluid song to your read doesn't mean you're getting it across either. The best songs are ones that may have a central theme but are not repetitive. They change pitch, tone, volume, pace etc. as needed.

And then there's the question of self-awareness. To what extent does your mind consciously think "This sentence needs end on an uplift" without impeding the acting or natural feeling of the delivery...or do you need to be working with two minds at once.

For me, it's all of the above X 100, combined with that nebulous je ne sais quoi that can be so elusive at times....

Oh yes, and losing the headphones, in my case, is a big help in this area.
