My son the tech just emailed a warning about pc killer virus possibly being delivered thru Hallmark emails. Says the virus erases the whole pc and there is no current fix for it. Says you should verify through the sender before opening.

Always investigate...
Hallmark Hoax
Status: False, although real e-card viruses resembling this do exist

Uh, yeah, this was the real thing which had wiped out two pcs before my son sent his warning (not a forward).

Rob, would it be possible to have your son email me any info he might have asap? I deal with this sort of thing at my day job, so any details I could get from him would be appreciated so I can warn the masses on my end.

I just spent the whole day trying to get rid of a virus or worm or something. I have no idea how I got it. I suspect I got it from clicking on the StumbleUpon button...I clicked to the next site and poof-- 'puter restarted, and I was doomed. Now I'll be working all night to get caught up. I promised everyone would get their files by morning, even if I had to go rent studio time.

Thank you, Bob. But there will be dire consequences if people don't get their audio by morning. There are hamburgers and cute outfits to be sold! Romantic seafood dinners! Live music Friday night! For all your holiday catering needs!

(And I have an in-studio audition for a national tomorrow, so there's no wiggle room!)

Yikes. That's probably why I steer clear of Stumbleupon. It's like a box of chocolates...

You never know when you'll pick the "Spring Surprise"...

I've never clicked that Stumbleupon button. I'm only vaguely familiar with it. But, forewarned is forearmed. Wudnt touch it with a 10 foot pole now.

Thanks gang! Gasp

If you don't mind, send a copy my way as well.

I'm in an open area today so I can actually read PMs sent my way for a change.

With any luck I can get a copy for analysis Smile

On Wednesday, Security Fix warned readers about a newly-discovered security hole in Internet Explorer 7. I'm posting this again because Microsoft now says the flaw affects all supported versions of IE, and because security experts are warning that a large number of sites are being compromised in an effort to exploit this vulnerability and install malware on vulnerable systems.
. . .

I would advise Windows users to consider browsing the Web with anything other than Internet Explorer. . .

I was on Firefox when I got infected, so still be careful!

Hmmmmm wonder if that is how I got dinged on Friday. I am so careful, I generally get no viruses or malware on my computer. However I had to spend the whole evening trying to clean things up on Friday. Nothing critical, just a pain.

I go between Firefox and IE - so can't say for sure how it happened.

I think it's pretty unlikely that a "PC killer" virus could be delivered through Hallmark e-mails.

Much more likely is that people are getting that old virus where they get a message that says "A FRIEND SENT YOU A HALLMARK E-CARD" and they click the link, which takes them to a webiste that exploits a vulnerability they haven't patched.

Ways to solve these types of things:

1) Remember that Hallmark will NEVER send an anonymous e-card notification.

2) Always mouse over links in e-mails to see where the link goes. If a Hallmark notification goes to any site other than hallmark.com, it's a phishing e-mail.

3) Turn on Automatic Updates for cryin' out loud Sticking out Tongue There really is no reason to not do this.
