I hope all of you who celebrate Christmas had a peaceful one.

I received a few unexpected little upgrades/enhancements that are making my VO world a bit better. My studio is in our basement and it gets rather cold in the winter. I had received two completely quiet, radiant heaters for my birthday last month but even those weren't quite doing the job. Now I have an infrared "brood warmer" lamp over my desk, which hubby bought at a local farm supply store, and now I'm warm as toast. He also got a little device called "Kill A Watt" which measures electricity consumption so we can figure out what it costs to run all this equipment and figure that into expenses for the year. And finally, an extension cable thingy that I can plug my speakers and headphones into and not have to unplug and plug when I want to switch between the two (irrelevant for those of you running their headphones through mixers, which is probably most of you).

I was pretty tickled with these gifts since they are small things that make a big difference to me. Would love to hear about others' Christmas gear or other fun toys (or good food!).

Glad you will be nice n' warm whilst recording!

My most miserable recording time I remember was in a freezing studio in Germany - me pipes were playing up because of the cold and it was so-o-o hard to sing "happy" in the chill!

Christmas gear....... oh yes! I bought my husband the new Samson CO1U and a mic stand so he can record his guitar compositions without waiting for my equipment to be available (and with little set uHobo Happy - He loves it!

And for myself, I got a Shure KSM44 and expensive mic cable - oh yum!

I also got, a book by Carol Maggio called "Facercise" - which was an unbeknownst godsend. Just before Christmas, I had decided to look for a good speech therapist to help me with my weally wotten pwoblem with my "r"s. I had written to a lady who emailed back to call her if interested - THEN she also called. She never mentioned the speech therapy, and instead wanted to know how to get into voice overs in a very rude and demanding way - even asking me where I get my work from! Really! (I told her THAT was my OWN business) When I asked her a few questions about what she could do for me, she was very insular and said it would cost me at least $1,000. I said I would call IF interested.

Anways, after doing the Carol Maggio exercises just twice, my "r" problem is GONE! A very happy side effect I did not expect and which I am very happy about. So I thought I would pass that along to my chums here.

What did everyone else have from Santa?

I didn't get any studio stuff, but I did get a very nifty gadget: a video iPod.
In black, natch.

teh r0xx0rz, I tells yeh, and a complete surprise.

I happen to know I'm not the only one here who got a complete music-related surprise this year... but that's all I'm sayin'.

In the post-Xmas smoothery, I intend to figure out how to hang heavy drapes fromn the tin ceiling in Mission Control. I need to create a Cone Of Silence so I can use my nifty Got-it-from-Brian Røde NTK.

I got my older son, Bo--affectionately known as Guitar Boy, the video game Guitar Hero. Boy is it hard! and a scream to boot.
Dylan, aka Younger Bear, got Dance Dance Revolution.
I got We [Heart] Katamari. I can hardly keep away from the darned game system now.

DeWitt got books on Diebenkorn, Marsden Hartley and Eadweard Muybridge.

Ho Ho Ho!
Life is Grand.

DB,

Have you ever thought about making moveable walls (similar to those found in a cubicle office setting? Add some foam and off you go... three work well and when you dont need them you can move them against the solid wall and still have the room you desire. (Like when you edit and don't need the isolation.)

Just a thought.

Not cheap but lightweight and portable.

And I got a new TV which is good for many reasons.
1) The 27" is going in the bedroom
2) It's a 32" (Not HD but it was free so I'm happy)
3) It has component inputs for my DVD player. Oh Mammy!!!

Ditto. My wife walked in just before we went to her family's place in Jersey and says, "Close your eyes because I didn't wrap it!" It had 15gig of music before the first hour was up and I was on my way to Best Buy for accessories.

I also picked up a brother-in-law who works for HSC in Florida. All in all, very nice holiday!

Those video iPods are power hogs. Don't know if Macs are vulnerable to this, but if you find your computer hanging up, cherchez l'iPod! When my computer crashed last month it was because it was nursin' a video iPod that had been completely discharged.

Let me know if you find a carrying case for the things that actually fits. I got cases for my kids for Xmas that said "fits standard iPods". They fit, but the window is smaller than the iPod window so it cuts off some of the screen. And you really need a case because the screen gets scratched very easily.

Christmas gifts...hmmm... let's see...
white socks... boxers... shirts... slacks... more socks...
a nifty wine bottle opener... Stanley Intelli Sensor Pro Stud finder... (Now my wife will always be able to find me... never mind.)
more briefs... jacket... chocolate covered cherries with brandy.

Ok... now the other stuff.
A 19" Samsung SyncMaster 914v monitor... I needed that.
MC-40 Mic Stand and Boom Package... now I don't have to hold the mic in my hand anymore... yippee!!
There was suppose to be a new Behringer mixer, but let's just say that there was a shipping problem and it should be here soon.

I'll just have to wait for the next gift barrage coming up on my birthday... January 10th!!!

I guess I should have included another... unexpected family gift. On the 26th, we had a house full of plumbers re-piping the whole house. Instead of repairing a broken pipe (all the plumbing is in the slab) we opted to have the house re-piped, overhead. What better way to spend $4,800 after Christmas. Oh... and let's not forget the phone call on the 26th from my sister-in-law, telling us that my wife's parents were both taken to emergency that morning with carbon monoxide poisoning (faulty furnace). They're doing fine for 76 and 83 year olds. We're thankful they pulled through... but I usually don't like that much excitement at Christmas.
