Hi!
I apologize if this was covered somewhere, but I couldn't find what I was looking for in previous threads.

This is for people located in LA:

-who is your ISDN supplier and what exactly do you ask for? (I hear there's different types of ISDN, I just want to make sure I ask for the right one)
-does it come in a bundle with telephone line and internet, or is this totally different and should be purchased separately from a different supplier?
-how much does it cost? Any long distance deals that you know of? (I'd be making call to the UK and France regularly)

Thanks a lot!

Claire.

Clair:
Your ISDN supplier will be whatever TelCo serves the location. If you get Verizon service, then it's Verizon. If ATT, then it's ... you guessed it.

ISDN service is not bundled with anything, it's completely separate and must be ordered from the correct department. The order process is not trivial, you must know what to ask for.

It costs $50-$70/month plus long distance, and you'll use whatever LD service you choose (Sprint, Verizon, MCI), not sure how the rates differ, but the per minute charge is the same as your standard analog phone.

If you don't want to do the homework, you can hire me to set it up for you.
PM me for info...

I don't live in the US yet, so this does not make much sense to me. What I wanted to know is what companies provide ISDN in LA, and which one is the best one.

Thanks, I'm glad it's not in a bundle, it'll be easier. so what do I ask for?

I may end up doing that. It's not that I don't want to do the home work, it's that I can't find the answer to my questions anywhere. And online, the only thing I find is the old ISDN used for dial up internet connection which I believe is not the same as what I need. If I call and ask for ISDN, that's what they are going to give me Frown
That's also why I was wondering if the ISDN gave me internet.

Thanks for your help, I think this ISDN is far too complicated for me to deal with it when I move. If it had been in a bundle I would have set it up at the same time I sort out everything else for the house, but since it's separate, I think I'll wait until I'm settled in and I'll probably call you for help!

Claire,

I can perhaps help with one part of your question. There are many different telephone companies in the USA and when you move somewhere, you get service from the telephone company that serves a given city or neighborhood. In some areas you have a choice from more than one telco, but not in every case. So, in some parts of Southern California, Verizon is the main telco, in other parts of the region, AT&T is the telco. Etc.

Sorry Claire, there was a bit of assumption on my part that you already lived in the US. In LA, it depends where your address is located. Some parts are Verizon, some are ATT, you really have no choice.
Let me know when you have an address, and we can start the process.

It's my fault, I should have told you!
Thank you and thanks Bob!

Claire,

You are, as always, very welcome. And since you're going to be on this side of the pond soon, perhaps I will get to see you again sooner rather than later? Smile
