Steve,

Very interesting voices you have inside your head. I think the most effective bits are when your characters are telling a piece of story. The rest, while somewhat interesting, don't hold my attention as much.

I like your accents,
I think you got very good acting chops but the demo is kind of long and some of the characters repeat themselves...
I think you should shorten it up to make it have a higher impact, and then it's excellent.

Let's see...I'd cut the first couple of things that are more noise than voice...

And overall it sounds like you sat in front of your mic one day and recorded as many different voice snippets as you could muster and glued them together. None of what I heard (I only listened for a bit less than a minute) sounded like it came from an actual produced commercial or animation piece. The same mic, the same mic settings, the same person behind the voice in every take.

Change it up. Make them sound like clips that came from actual work with music, SFX, different mics or EQ's. Have us believe there's context behind each one. While we'd never lie about what work we've done if we were asked point blank, there's no harm in showing them what you'd sound like in real productions if you'd actually done them.

Bob, Mia & Bruce:
Thanks for your feedback.
I'm taking these suggestions on board, and I hope to re-do a few demos in the next week or two.
I'll post them for your entertainment and edification when they're done...
Thanks again!
Cheers!

Steve;

Character voices are by definition, not meant to sound like the real you. However, they do need to give the listener the feeling that they are real so that they can tell their "story" in a way that communicates with the listener. It's not just about flexing your voice around to produce different sounds. And it's more than visualizing the character. To really bring it, there has to be a separate "track" running under your voice sound that supports the sound with the emotion and feelings.

In most of these voices, the sound of the voice didn't match the emotion or feeling in the voice, except for three of them: Nikolai, the guy who said "always rude, always hungry," and the voice saying "from them there would be no help." And in these three, I think you could have brought more of that "feeling track" to the performance.

Thanks for listening!

Phyllis
