I work at a college. (I'm a multi award winning, 47 yr. old, producer dude - for what that's worth). (Just HAD to slip that in there..yep..yep..)
My associate Dean asked me "the expert" about this. (Yes, we do teach Pro Tools Virginia..) For those of you who may take for granted...

I, like you, insist on the 'heart and soul' of production. The recording devices - be they decent - are NOT the end result. It's what you hear in your head before you even bring the voice in. It's the producer reading it out loud for time, emphasizing words and catching 'catch phrases' before bringing the voice in. It's telling the available voice to communicate that sentence or word "this way" a few times, even though the voice may disagree. It's auditioning music for 1 hour that you can't afford, to get that perfect piece. And then changing it. It's taking a walk to clear the ears. Tweaking that comp so that it sounds close to that air check you heard from LA. It's calling the girlfriend to say you'll be home in 1 hour - knowing that you mean 3, to have her suffer through endless listenings of your cassette copy of that spot.
In the morning, nobody said anything. And then you start over again.

That's production, and it's not Pro Tools.
