Finally, apologies to Allen. I wasn't aware of the production arm of your business. When you mentioned the quality of the Behringer preamps, I assumed you were sending your mic signal through them. I still believe that sending a mic signal through multiple preamps is a questionable practice. So if you are sending your mic through a mixer, I think it's a good idea to route it in such a way as to bypass the mixer's preamps.

Hi Jim, no problem. My apologies to you and everyone else. I didn't want the post to seem like I was upset. I don't use many outboard sources of audio BUT do have the occassion to, so a mixer is needed. Like VO-Guy, all my sound effects and music beds (the small collection that I have) are on the hard-drive. If BBeen wanted to start up cheap and still have a very nice sound, get a good mic and the Behringer mixer with built-in preamps. He can make adjustments with the three band EQ on the mixer and/or software processing. That's what I used before getting my preamp/processor and it sounded great.
You're right Frank, mostly just for control. I would rather just leave the pre/processor alone and use the mixer to adjust the levels going in. Plus when I do have the need to add an extra source, the mixer's there and ready to go.
As far as the Samson mic, I've read about it, but have no experience with it. I am mic shopping myself. Leaning toward the Neuman TLM103 right now.
Again, my apologies guys/girls. Didn't mean to make sound like I was upset.
Good day to all!

I own two MXL 2001 - they were project mics and were $99 new, they do not have the sound I expected, but I was told by many that changing the electronics made a remarkable improvement. Now I just don't have the time.
The issue with the Chinese knockoff mics is the quality control. They do not sound the same - they sound close, the capsules may not last as long as the German brands but that's questionable these days. For $100 it's hard to do worse. _________________ Genus |

I used a Behringer B1 when I first started for years. Believe it or not it didn't sound bad at all. Even used it on some stuff after I upgraded to a Rode NTK and SM7. Just throwing something out that sounds pretty good that won't cost ya an arm and a leg. |

UMM...WOW! That seems like a lot of juice for $150.00. I'd say that's a sweet deal. |

In my search here to read about different equipment, I just finished perusing this thread (you anti-mixers, you!). Am I correct to assume that, in setting up a mobile studio, I can get away with a lesser chain: no mixer, mic to firewire or some audio interface/soundcard to my DAW and voila? I've got my phone prompts done and ready to send?? I was just looking at the Mackie DFX-6 (mini mixer, not an anti-mixer. I need a mixer now, to go with that booze, I'm so confused. Rhyming here...) _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

BBeen,
Your specific computer system (chipset, etc.) will determine how happy you are with the M-Audio USB MobilePre. As Frank has posted elsewhere, some USB audio interfaces don't work all that great with some computers.
However, allow me to share this bit of encouragement. I use a M-Audio USB MobilePre as my primary voice-over audio interface both in my home studio and on the road. I've recorded narrations that have run on national TV programs (PBS, History Channel, Coral Ridge Hour), other national TV programming (Lockheed Martin, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association) national radio programs (Truths That Transform, Hour of Decision), international podcasts (Embassy of Austria, Office of Science and Technology) as well as hundreds of local and regional radio and TV programs, spots and long-form narrations using my Audio Technica AT-4033 mike and my MobilePre. I've been using this set-up for about 2 years now.
No one, from national clients to local, has ever complained about the quality of the audio. Work in a quiet and sonically treated room, with a quality mike and a professional level audio interface and there's almost no limit to what you can do.
I too look forward to hearing how things work for you. _________________ Be well,

it was a big decision when I decided NOT to have a mixer. Instead i got a Mackie "BIG KNOB". It's just for monitoring. It has a great big knob to control the volume of your monitors. It's comforting.

Tom,
I think you'll find the mike pre-amps in that Mackie mixer will do very well for you. And with the Firewire card, you won't need any other audio interface to your computer. What you've put together is something I very nearly went with, but my pool of available funds shrank due to other priorities so I got the USB MobilePre instead. _________________ Be well,
