I'm wondering if I can use this piece of equipment in a pinch. What do you think of the quality? The first is just as recorded. The second I used noise reduction on. I'll tell you what I recorded it on once you tell me what you think of the quality.

No. Very poor quality and would not give a good impression.

I don't hear much difference between the 2, Melissa, and don't hear any problems. Maybe Philip has fuzz in his ears? Or maybe I have some rawkin' studio monitors? Probably neither. Sounds fine to me.

I actually hear skipping and static....like a scratchy record.

When I clicked on the links, they played in Quick Time. So I downloaded to AA and played from my DAW and still, they sound fine, just like in QT. Mysterious!

Listened again. Has a boxy, thin sound like an mp3 with all the fullness removed.

Is there anything wrong with it in terms of it being a recording of a voice, your voice? No. Is it the type of quality people should expect from someone who is marketing themself as a pro voice? No. Context is everything. You're a pro voice who thoroughly deserves to do extremely well. Getting by at a pinch is not where you're going.

Having said all of the above if there is someone with a paying job who is happy with the sound that's the most important thing.

I'm with Phillip on the sound.

But the room, mic, etc. could be affecting the sound as much or more than what it's being recorded into.

To my ear, back off the noise reduction. That rendition sounds tinny, sort of like bad streaming audio that you sometimes hear. I'm not saying no noise reduction, just less.

I am entirely curious why it sounds perfectly FINE to me. But more importantly, what Philip says is apt, absolutely.

OK - alright....

just wanted to see if I could get away with NOT lugging my mic and stand and micportpro (I know - that takes no room at all) and laptop on a trip.

This is actually a field recorder that I've been using for reporting. It's not even one of the $2k 'professional' ones. It's the Zoom H2. For newscasts using my handheld mic it sounds more than fine. But it also has 4 built in condenser mics. Wanted to see if it would work using just those....

*sigh* guess not - guess I'm back to lugging everything....

Thanks... sometimes you need lots of extra ears to hear what you don't want to hear - LOL!

It sounds boxy and wooden.

When you said Zoom H2 I had to do a double take, because I have the H4, which sounds nothing like your post.

I use my H4 for when I'm rehearsing at auditions or in classes so I can tell if I'm on the right track or not.

The H4 sounds very good, and you can plug a mic into it (it even has phantom power). It's sound quality is good enough to send out for an audition, but not for a production take.

I checked out the H4 because of the XLR inputs but it was too bulky for me to easily work with one hand while holding a mic with the other and I can also access all the functions on the H2 with one hand without having to mess with the wheel in the middle. It's great for field reporting. I wasn't planning on using the built in mics - but wanted to see if I actually could!

melissa - if you split the difference and plug your micportpro into your h2 (you'll need to get a cable with mini-usb on BOTH ends) you might have better luck. try recording at the highest bit rate available and see what you get. i haven't tried it, but in theory, it should work.

Hmm, I'll try that later Todd. Just got back. From where I went yesterday early. Which is where I was going to try the H2 if it sounded ok instead of lugging everything. Which I didn't. H2 that is. I lugged.

There is no way this will work, since the USB port on the H2 is omly for mounting the H2 as a drive on your PC or using it as an external audio source, and can't "host" another device like MicPort. That'd be neat, though!
