I've been doing VO for 4 years now, but have never done any broadcast work for a business in the town where I'm living. I still haven't, but I just did one for a business in Ann Arbor, MI where I lived for 10 years and where I got married and where my children were born. I still have a lot of friends as well as in-laws there. I sent the ad to a bunch of people and have had a bunch of emails back saying, oh, it's one of my favorite stores, or oh we've bought a lot of stuff there.
It's kind of funny and slightly embarrassing to realise that after 4 years I'm not jaded and still can get very excited about a little thing like this
Here's the ad. |

Nicely done, Mary.
And, never forget that "feeling". It's a good thing. (Sorry, Martha) |

I've been doing this for a zillion years and I still get a huge charge out of hearing myself on the radio. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Mary,
Even after 25 years I feel the same way, when I (every now and then) get to have something like that happen. _________________ Be well,

I love when that happens. I had an ad agency find me through my website to do a spot for Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital. The agency is located in my hometown (hint: where Moe Egan lives).
Another time I auditioned for a job on Voice123 and, naturally, was pleased to be hired. But I was even more pleased to discover that the VO was to be used as part of an exhibit at the CT Science Center that's currently under construction here in Hartford. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Nice Mary!
I too get a little giddy when I hear myself locally - it's rare. I don't do much around here, but it's fun to be in the car and suddenly hear yourself on the radio.
I get even giddier when it's VH-1 or Disney though.

isn't it funny how (those of us in smaller markets) rarely get work locally? and, yet ... somebody does. i think we've talked about this before ... just an observation. i talked to a guy two weeks ago who claims to have heard my voice at the m.e. hershey museum ... that was pretty cool for me. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

What's even funnier is the work I've gotten locally has been via voice123!!!!
I can't pay the local people to hire me! _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Mary,
The spot sounds great!!
I often get caught off guard when I am traveling to locations around the world filming my tv series. I will be in a hotel room...turn on the tv...and There I am on tv. Even though I've been doing this tv show for almost 9 years, I still feels strange seeing myself on tv in places like Switzerland, Tahiti, Honduras...etc. It feels odd to have someone stop me in an airport and ask to take a picture with me ...or have a child ask me for an autograph.
There are months that go by without a single on-camera booking...(feels like I can't buy a job)..But some stranger from Europe sees me in an airport and starts asking for pictures of me...weird!!!!
Local work...hard to get!...overseas...in demand!...go figure. |

As the booth announcer for one of the local TV stations, I do a lot of spots and promo VOs without seeing the video first. Then I'll be someplace where there's a TV on and I'll see something on the screen that registers "oh, that's the spot I did" and I'll perk up my ears to listen.
Another cool thing is when you are cast to do a part in a multi-voice commercial and find that you're working with somweone you know. For example, a few weeks ago I got to play the husband in a couple of spots and Melissa Ex played the wife. And as a bonus, the guy who was the announcer is someone I worked with maybe 20 years ago but not since. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
