|
|
Hi All. I recently got a Peluso 2247 Short Body mic and would like opinions on it. I've also posted samples of a couple other mics I have. I'd love any opinions on all the samples, but primarily the Peluso. For me, the jury is still out as to if I like the sound of the Peluso or not.
If this is the wrong section for this thread, I'll move it.
Any and all comments are appreciated!

The Peluso sounds better with the ECC81.
I like the Bluebird and M179 better. The Peluso has more low end, but it's muddy. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I actually thought the Bluebird sounded muddier, though I was impressed with its sound overall....
I'll have to listen to the Peluso again before I weigh in on it... |

Josh
First I love Peluso Microphones. I have 3 matched 22-251 (as seen on the left).
I am also a dealer for the product and am very near to the lab.
My recollection of the short body is that it uses a CE6072A.
Are these tubes you mention a modification from the lab or a third party application?
A little background info about John. Years ago he worked in recording studios in Chicago that specialized in VO recording. He has a good understanding of the business of VO.
I have heard A-B samples at the Peluso lab of Telfunken U47 next to Peluso 22-47LE and it is very hard to distinguish from them. I have not, to my recollection heart the 22-47 Short Body.
If you are considering the purchase of the 22-47 you have demoed with the tubes you mentioned then you know what you are getting. If you are buying new, consider that the lab may still be using the CE6072A .
This link will take you to an NPR story about John and his Microphone Lab http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89705610&ft=1&f=1021 _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

Thanks for the comments so far. I too like the CAD and Bluebird samples better, but getting another set of ears to listen is always a good thing. I know John Weeks likes the 2247 with the ECC81 better than any mic samples I've sent him over the last year. I agree, like Lance, that the ECC81 sounds best between those 2 tubes and I like it better than the original tube. (sample of the 2247 with the original tube posted below)
I guess what I like about the CAD and BLUE is the clarity compared to the 2247, although I think they are both a little too bright. Quoting John Weeks, "I like some parts of both. Too bad you couldn't breed the Peluso and the Bluebird and get a Pelubird!" LOL
@ ED. Yes, you are right, the original tube is the CE6072A. The other two tubes were ones I bought from Eurotubes.com. As I mentioned, I posted a sample with that tube below, but I think there may be a problem with it. I actually shipped the mic to John Peluso today to have it fixed. (really nice guy by the way) The mic was making weird intermittent crackling and hissing noise. John thought it was either the tube or a bad cap, so he's going to have a look to make sure all is good.
Thanks for the link, Ed. I've heard that interview before, but it was nice to listen again. I actually wish it was longer.
So here is the 2247 with the original tube. Thoughts on it compared to the others?

Thanks again for your comments. Judging the sound of a mic/voice I'm producing is no problem usually, but judging the sound of my own mic/voice can be tricky. I never really like the sound of it, no matter the mic, so it's good the get a non-biased opinion(s). _________________ Josh Mahler

I'm listening through my Event Project Studio 6 monitors...
I like the 2247 with ECC81 tube the best. I like the richness and depth, and this tube makes it a bit crisper and clearer to my 45-year-old ears.
However, I personally like to do mic testing by actually reading several different styles of scripts, rather than just talking into the mic. I think it is more of a "real world" sort of test, since that's the way we'd actually be using the mic.
I've been doing a lot of tube-swapping and playing around with different mics and preamps myself, and within a week or so I plan to share my results. I really like when people do this sort of thing, so thanks!
Also, to my ear the CAD 179 and Bluebird sound very much alike. I wonder if you really need both of them in your mic collection.
Hope this helps! _________________ Best regards,

I just listened to all the samples with much under 200Hz taken away...the Peluso is the winner: maybe that mud is from working too close or the mic picking up more of the room.
I change my mind, go with the Peluso for your voice...and maybe even with the stock tube!
I still liked the sE Titan best on your voice, and I'm not a sE fan. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Thanks again. Well, this is exactly why I posted the samples, as I mentioned, for more sets of ears! Maybe this is a keeper after all, although that Gefell MT71s sure is calling my name! lol
Once the Peluso gets back from repairs, I'll post more samples, including ones further back from the mic to see if that clears up some of the mud, which it should.
Tom, I do agree with you with the "real world" thing. I'll be sure to post the samples with real world reads. _________________ Josh Mahler
