I'm just starting in the business, and of course would like any critiques that could help me polish this up a bit or even know for sure that this would be presentable to most agencies.

No soft-soap here. Good try, but your reads didn't match the copy.
I would recommend taking some voice over classes-- Marc Cashman would be a good start for you. |

Mr. Depth, I'm guessing you've been told "you have a great voice. You should go into voice over". Of course, I can't tell if you have a great voice, because I can't hear your voice. I only hear your imitation of what you think voice over is. This is a prime example of where having a "good voice" is totally irrelevant to voice over.
As has been said above, find a reputable coach, get an analysis of whatever talent you may have and follow their direction. Releasing a subpar demo like those on your myspace page will only harm any future career you might have. _________________ Jeff

There surely must be some reason Philip would write such a sarcastic, hurtful post against someone brand-new to the craft. Someone who came in with no attitude, except wanting to get an honest critique.
As successful as he is, Philip surely must have better ways to spend time between his 900-plus sessions than trashing the innocent.
Or maybe he just enjoys being nasty. And apparently most everyone else here thinks it's charming.
Not me. Not at all. |

It was more silly than nasty (the later not intended)but I accept that there could be a difference in the attitude it was written than in the perception of any who read what I wrote.
B, as always I appreciate your honest perspective. A second look is never wasted. |

Hi Depthpersuasion, your voice sounds too young for trailer work...or at least that kind of trailer work. Forget trailers and sounding big and just work on your real voice, which could be really good with training and focus.
Watch out for your diction...you over-pronounce a lot of things trying to push things out too hard, and then other words come out very slack ("Meal" in the KFC spot comes out at "Muhl"). Most everyone does this coming out of the gate.
Take it a step at a time and you'll get there. Listen to and learn from guys that are your age. I'm 38 and I can play 28-48...and maybe cartoonish older and younger voices: but not real ones. Don't come off cartoonish when you're doing your straight up money voice...voice your age.
Good luck. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

That's it! Thanks Lance. "Straight out of the gate we ..."
When first we launch ourselves as Voice Overists we are so in love with our voices, our sound we ignore everything else. Don't worry about it WE ALL DID IT!!! ALL OF US!
My father was a Yorkshireman and as he would have said "This'll sound reet bloody daft, ger ovah thee sen". Put another way, forget how you sound because as a Voice Overist you will only ever be selling someone else.
The Voice Overist who recovers from his or her own personal greatness goes on to say things like ...."In a world"
The Voice Overist who never recovers from his or her personal greatness goes on to say things like ...."Hello, my name's Philip and I'll be your waitress today". |

All right, I am not going to be cute or anything but straight forward. You have some nice interpretation in the Spidey Trailer. That said, your voice does not carry the ominous feel desired for this type of spot. Your voice feels young, and not seasoned enough to carry the apocalyptic tone.
I took a few minutes and put something together to show you a difference in feel which I hope you can hear. Spider Dude Trailer - Click Hear!
The other examples are very similar in tone and presentation style. Learn to moderate the tone of your voice. Try not to push your voice into an unnatural depth. This is a normal thing for many who are just starting in the art of voice acting.
Relax, and let your natural voice become your money voice. You will require some practice before you attempt another set of demo files. You have some innate potential which if nurtured will serve you with the dream, but you need some proper coaching or much more importantly -- practice.
Listen to other peoples demo's and determine if what you have presented for our review compares to those who are doing this for a living today. Single spots are not always a good idea, but in this case served your goal of getting feedback.
Keep working and you allow yourself to discover the "real" voice within yourself.
Good luck.
Toodles

Good example Frank...notice that his voice (nor most of the voices of the trailer greats) are actually not that low in pitch. Much of the time, Frank is actually a tad bit higher, or isn't trying to force out that lower harmonic.
It's all about the timing, the acting, and the growl or gravitas: not about trying to be a VO guy.
Again, good luck. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover
