Hi gang,
It's rather sad for me to say this, but I'm hanging up the VO mic for a while. I have had too many outside commitments with family, my day job, financial crap (yes, it really cramps the VO lifestyle not having the finances to afford what I need to really punch this thing). I've had to put my focus on a few smaller things at the moment, so I'm trying to get my priorities in order.
There are four passions I have in life. VO, music, comedy and acting. I had a long discussion with my wife about a month and a half ago about these four things. She and I decided that I need to put my focus on one of my passions, not all four at once. I decided on comedy for now, because it comes more naturally to me than VO does (damn I hate to say that), and I figure if I get some real experience with that, along with still practicing my reading and such, it will better prepare me for when I feel the time is right for me to re-enter the VO world.
If you want to see me performing some stand up, here's the video. . .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoFcl4s_TIc.
I want to thank each and every one of you that have offered advice, friendship and love to me in support of my VO dream over the last three years I've been lingering. My dream is not dead, nor will it ever be. I will become a success in VO, it's just not in the cards at this particular moment in time. I will be, from time to time, stopping by the VO-BB to see how everyone is doing.
If you want to call me and chat, my home number is 517 610-5095, If you want to email me, you can email me at ChrisFrenchComedy@gmail.com, or ChristopherFrenchVO@hotmail.com.
I'm only hanging up the VO mic for a little while. I'm going back on stage to see what I can do there. If you have any comments, questions, concerns, critiques on my comedy or whatever, please post them here, as I will be checking this for awhile.
Thank you all. I love you all.

...been exactly where you are, friend, and am still not far from it. in my own case, it was VO i just couldn't walk away from.
take heart that the things you experience in your comedy and performing can only help you become a better voice actor when it's time to fire up the studio mic again. _________________ rowell gormon

Chris, all four of your passions (VO, music, comedy and acting) deal with one special thing... timing. And fitting them ALL into the timing of life can be a heavy load to haul. Best of luck to you and your family. Don't be a stranger. _________________ "Bailey"

Quote: | There are four passions I have in life. VO, music, comedy and acting. | Same here, and I've found ways to do all four at the same time.
I posted this on another forum recently, but it seems worthwhile to mention it here: Quote: | I get very little voiceover work. However, I do book semi-regular work performing for live events doing storybook reading for kids (booked a gig for that this week, actually), and performing as a comedian, impressionist, and impersonator.
I have some musical comedy album projects planned over the next few years, a one-man show I hope to launch in the next year, and I'm developing live performance programs for schools, churches, and corporate events.
And they all involve voice acting. I've found a way to be a working voice actor (in a literal sense, since I specialize in character voices and impressions) without even being involved in the highly competitive VO industry. | And I empathize completely with "not having the finances to afford what [you] need to really punch this thing." I haven't been able to submit any VO auditions since last fall other than those I've gone to record at a studio or at my agent's sound booth and it's because my computer constantly has issues. It's a Frankenstein that my brother built for me, and I'm grateful to have at least a functioning computer but it's no good to me for VO work.
I would also like to upgrade my other equipment and get some demos produced for character voices, narration, industrials, and I also need a vocal music demo to book more work as a singer so I don't have to keep auditioning in person all the time.
But due to my work situation -- forced to go full-time as a performer because I've had two employers file for bankruptcy since '07, I'm able to book just enough work to help keep the bills paid and precious little else. And paid performance work in my area has shrunk as well due to the economy, so I'm having to go back to applying for retail management jobs again so my wife and I can hopefully get ahead financially. And doing that means putting my own dreams and what I enjoy doing as a career on hold since working retail has little flexibility to perform regularly, so I completely understand where you're coming from.
I wish success to you in your future endeavors. _________________ Publisher: Voice Actors in the News
