Quote: | This delivery job is about delivering words

The Orange County Register
Tired of your job? Just been laid off? Looking for a new line of work? Ever hear about voiceovers?
Mike Elmore likes to tell people that for a minimal investment, they can begin making extra money – or even forge a new career – lending their voice to Web sites, TV or radio commercials, audio books, instructional DVDs, a company's telephone tree, automated toys, games or almost anything with a pre-recorded voice.
Jobs you might be hired for could include Web audio, local radio commercials, telephone systems, TV commercials and PowerPoint presentations.
"Anyone with Internet access can find voiceover work," Elmore said Monday evening, teaching a two-hour Capistrano Community Educationcourse called "Voiceovers Introduction."
Eight South County residents paid $35 each for the evening class on the upper campus of San Clemente High School. Cindy Sproul of Laguna Niguel said she can see herself in a new career: "Absolutely! It's totally doable. I don't want a 9-to-5 job ever again."
Sproul recently was laid off from the customer-service job she had held for 11 years. "Their No. 1 employee," she described herself. "They closed the whole office."
About 10 years ago, she underwent a voiceover assessment as part of her job, "and they told me that I needed to pursue this," she said.
Now she plans to.
Apart from animation work, most voiceovers are done on home recording setups, Elmore said. | I don't want to speak negatively of this Mike Elmore (I checked out his website and he says he's been in the VO biz since 1985), but the way he speaks so casually about the voiceover industry in this article is seriously misleading. It also tells me that just because someone may be a quality VO talent, it doesn't also automatically qualify them as an experienced voiceover instructor. _________________ Publisher: Voice Actors in the News

I've been in the Voice Over industry (it isn't an industry) since 1990 but that means nothings as I've only been making a living since 2010.
People said "You have a nice voice" so I thought why not? The answer to "why not?" was, 8 failed marriages, 4 bankruptcies, I've become a bore and have the worst case of piles in medical history.
$35 per head to find out how to be like me? Anyone? |

I think there a lot of people trying to take advantage of this voice over gold rush.
There is a disease that seems to be more and more common today. It's a nasty thing that makes it difficult to even comprehend reality....it's called GREED.
People are watching these things and karma can be a mean mistress.

I've been approached by at least half a dozen prospective VOs since they found out this is what I "do"...most have no idea what it truly entails, and most don't pursue it much further once they find out..... |

Since Mike is a member of this board, he can speak for himself; but I would point out that not every newspaper article is a completely accurate depiction of the interview as it was conducted. _________________ Be well,

Good point Bob!
A cliche to remember, as well: The cream rises to the top (or however that goes). _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

I haven't viewed the article because the link won't open on my phone for some reason and I am at Cartoon Network (CA) without computer access, right now. I would invite anyone that can access the link to copy a few of the passages that you find to be inaccurate and post them...and I will respond. Some may be completely inaccurate with relation to what was said (the reporter had an obvious mental and physical handycap..but may be a WONDERFUL writer..again, I haven't seen the article). Please post any portions you might question and I would love to respond.
While some may be inaccurate....I have found that many established VO people get on soap boxes and just end up what I equate to whining about someone charging 35.00 to bring someone into a room and explain to them how things work and give them an honest evaluation (which is exactly what I do)....This is almost like the Mac or PC discussions that wear me out and turn me off just thinking about them.
But...I would welcome any paragraphs, quotes...etc that anyone feels are inaccurate.....so I can take a look. Otherwise I will just check it out when I get back to my hotel LATE tonight...if I even remember~~
Thanks to Bob S. though for recognizing that sometimes things are a little skewed in the media. I have been MISquoted more times that I have even kept track of~ |

When they said, "Get into voice overs. You could end up with piles of money," perhaps they were half right. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Mike, et al.
I chose not to post early because of what was printed in the newspaper article.
So, not quoting, just a perception and point of view. The article seemed to be skewed toward having someone pay $35.00 and becoming a marketable talent in just one hour. I read between the lines and felt you might have been offering some ideas about doing VO and maybe an opinion about income possibilities from your point of view.
Since there are numerous people in our business who offer the "come-on" Introduction to Voice Over sessions. Then, with the bait firmly implanted; tell the participants they have good voices and for only $8,000.00 more they too can be making sacks and sacks of money by just talking; the notion of your being one of those "so-called" coaches did cross my mind.
Having been mis-quoted by the press many times, I choose to not offer interviews presently as I can (and do) create my own mis-representations.
I can only offer this bit of wisdom on this situation: You are your own - best "brand manager". Are you representing your brand everywhere.
Everything you do and everything you do not do is marketing.
I, for one, am happy to see you here on the VO-BB to explain the mis-conceptions.
Toodles

Haha....Well I can assure you that I have NEVER in my life used the word "PILES" to describe anything other than mounts of gravel, dirt and probably something the dog left on the lawn. I have NEVER claimed to ANYONE that "IN JUST 7 DAYS FROM YOUR ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT....YOU CAN CREATE WEALTH AND PROSPERITY AND ROLL AROUND IN 'PILES OF MONEY".......It took me 4 years before I was able to build a production company and do this full time....If that is a quote (again I haven't see the article) then THAT ONE is FOR SURE inaccurate. Whoa is me...I am in LA with only about a 2 hour break and now I am obsessing over wanting to see what this guy has written.... |
