As usual I'm way too close to this to have any perspective, my lovely wife Emma's latest narration reel. Your feedback, good, bad, constructive, whatever is appreciated.

So what's new? Well, for the first time I've faded the tracks in and out of each other. Normally I'd do pretty hard chops like I approach commercial reels, but maybe I'm getting mellow in my dotage - these little cross fades just seem to sound smoother to my ears.

Let me know what you think?

Thanks hugely

Emma sounds great but no matter how creative the mixes and fades and music and FX and giant troops of marauding Belgian Squirrels they will make no difference to the 1min 32 secs of identical delivery. What we need is radical contrast. I know that sounds like a 1980's band, Radical Contrast - Their new CD "Urban Collective, out now!

Emma has a lovely voice and reads well, however this demo doesn't show much range in delivery styles. It's good to have industrial, medical, fashion, and rock and roll documentary all in the same demo, but the pacing and style are all very similar. Also, 1:30 is a fine length for a narration demo, but some of the cuts seem a bit short...maybe five longer ones might be better than the seven.

On the tech side, something that adds to the sameness is it all sounds like she was recorded on the same mic, she's the same distance from the mic, and everything is a bit over compressed. Play with the variables a tiny bit including EQ and compression to see if you can't give the impression of these being totally separate events. The music is also too loud on some cuts and maybe not always appropriate to the material. Also medial narrations rarely have music behind them so I suggest dropping that.

Other than all that, a good start. Much luck to you both!

Point taken Philip, but aren't you trotting out convential wisdom? I just had a listen to your corporate demo, and, forgive me for saying so, but you don't appear to be taking your own medicine. Times have changed. We're living in an age of specificity, and the days of the versatile generalist went out when you and I stopped schlepping up and down the M6 for £5 a read.

You're quite right but is there a difference in corporate and narration? My corporate demo is dull and dull is the new black - luckily for me. If you're intention was to produce a corporate demo, you've hit the target and I say that without implying it's dull - I DO DULL so Emma will have to find another USP thank you very much as she simply doesn't have what it takes to bore to international standards.
