|
|
I just had to share this. Last night, about 30 minutes after my wife and I went to bed she woke me up because of a noise. I listened for a while and it sounded a lot like water draining out of a bathtub, but it was coming from downstairs in the dining room, where we have one of our two fish tanks with this guy named Edmund:
(He's a bit bigger now, like an oversized oven mitt around 14 inches long)
Turns out the bottom of the tank had sprung a leak. There we are with a 55 gallon tank gushing into the carpeted dining room. Now the fish is living in a large tupperware container, and we spent a lovely two hours draining the tank and moving it outside, running the shop vac over the carpet, and toweling off everything. Oh joy. So the question is do we buy another tank or fillet him and fry him up for dinner? _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

It's stories like these that make me think about how much animals (including humans) are dependent on sound to keep them out of trouble. Very lucky that your wife's ears are tuned in to what the environment ought (not) to sound like. |

He looks mean...like he'd give you indigestion in his afterlife....I'd opt for the new tank. _________________ - Peter

Used to have fish tanks and stuff until I realized what a huge expense and PITA it was. Oscars are pretty cool...but smaller fish don't really do well with them. I'm thinking cat food, myself. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

We used to run three tanks, but are now down to two. The Oscar had two friends when he was only 4 inches or so, but he ate them once he got bigger so now he lives alone. He's 6 years old, and will probably last another 4 to 9 years. And he is a big PITA. He likes to break stuff. We've gone through 3 heaters in the last 2 years because he smashes them. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Hmmmm....
Me-thinks you may have just answered your own question!
Seriously, I used to be into aquariums big-time but the time finally arrived for me to rethink continuing with some of my big guys. (2 foot airawanna, can't spell it anymore but you know what I mean, and a 2 foot needle-nose gar) The fish fry idea didn't go over to well given we had these guys around for years. Flushing them down the toliet wouldn't work and releasing them into a nearby stream on our farm, although a kinder and gentler approach, quickly gave way to taking them to my favorite pet-shop and selling them back. They were able to re-sell them to new owners.

That's what I did. Wound up selling my Oscars and Kissers to a pet shop, and all the gear at a yard sale. Sometimes I miss those feeding times when I'd pour a bunch of guppies into the tank and let Herman and Lilly have at it. Of course, I suddenly had a WTF moment and realized those feeding frenzies were just too reflective of my real life in corporate TV management. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

True story.
I know a woman who came downstairs one day to see her 5y.o. daughter standing on a chair over a pot of steaming water on the stove. She was in shock to see her daughter in this precarious and dangerous situation. "What are you doing Honey?"
"I'm cooking you dinner Mommy!"
Mommy ran over to look in the pot only to discover one of their exotic salt water fish, valued at around $100, tumbling lifelessly in the water.
Now those of you who have kept aquariums know how difficult it is to catch a fish in a 30 or 50 gal. tank. I simply cannot imagine how this little girl ever did it... but I love the visual I get from this story.

Some of the ugliest fish make for the finest dining. |
