I’m trying to get a dark read here...

http://www.creativeidentitygroup.com/clients/wgfa/scss-pagliacci-30-20090618.mp3

And the first part of this spot...

http://www.creativeidentitygroup.com/clients/wgfa/scss-TOOLONG-30-20090618.mp3

And a happy read here...

http://www.creativeidentitygroup.com/clients/wgfa/scss-tenderland-30-20090618.mp3

Problem is I need to work on broadening my range. They sound so close to me that I'm not sure I hit what I was looking for here.

Did I come anywhere close? What can I do to hit the read the way I’m looking for?

I'm not clear on what kind of a critique you're looking for. The copy or your performance. Honestly, they all sounded kind of the same. I didn't get "dark" from the first one, other than the way it was written.

Your comment of "need to broaden my range" is interesting. Why? Is there something wrong with the range you've got?

The only thing I will say is back off the mic. You were 'ploding on things like Ts which usually only happens if you're on top of it.

That's my point. I'm shooting for a :"Dark": read on the Paglliacci spot... I just can't seem to hit it... So, any thoughts on how I can achieve that type of read would be appreciated.

Thanks Jeff!

What you're asking isn't something anyone's going to be able to answer. The read has to come from you. The equivalent question is "How should I play such-and-such a role?" No one can tell you that. The emotion has to be real and it has to come from within.

This is acting, not radio, a different beast altogether.

Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but perhaps by reading it, you'll go into a "dark" place and pull out the read. Smile

This is a good starting point though... I need to work on the acting part of "voice-acting".

...and I think that sameness is what he was talking about in the "I need to work on broadening my range" comment that you said you didn't understand.

Bingo. That was my immediate thought, especially when the third piece began. "Ahh...summer" doesn't have the happy vibe you said you were going for. It feels presented, not felt. In fact, that's how it all feels.

To build on what Jeff suggested, try stepping away from the mic and running through one piece of copy with a variety of emotions. It can be one of these spots, or anything else you have handy. The goal of this exercise isn't to hit what's needed for the spot. The goal is to practice emotional variety. Do one read where you're happy, another where you're sad, another where you're ticked off, another where you're afraid, etc. Just practice going different emotional directions. I also recommend acting classes if they're available in your area, but until you can get into that, perhaps this might help stretch that range a bit.

Listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpWB7gOHclk&feature=related and then ask yourself, do I believe him?
Now listen to the first clip you posted and then ask yourself, do I believe him? If you believe the first man but not the second ask yourself why and keep reading until you do believe.

Hopefully this will help a little.

Still not getting "Dark". The first one is slightly less chipper.

My original comments didn't work so we'll try putting it another way. Imagine your voice is a pre/eq/compressor, now

TURN

EVERYTHING

OFF

No inflection at all. Place your wallet on your desk when you play back what you record and fine yourself $5 for an upward inflection and $10 for a down. Allow people to listen to what you are saying rather than distract them with anything you do with your voice.

Remember when you were little and got the shit beat out of you by your older brother/sister/cousin or neighborhood bully? Go back to that night when you went to bed ... the time when you were laying in bed before you went to sleep when you were plotting your revenge....

I had an older brother ... all my reads are dark.
