What precludes me from being able to open .docx? I use Windows XP Pro.
And, what's the workaround?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I can read .docx docs from my Marion Berry _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I think you have to either have Word 2007 to be able to open it, or a program that can read it for you. I can't remember what it's called, but occasionally Voices.com will have a lead with a docx attachment, and they tell you whatever it is that you need.
Anyone remember the name of that whatsit? _________________ We have nothing to fear but fear itself.

I don't remember. The folks at voices.com gave me a link to download something so I could read them, but it doesn't work. I still can't open them.

Diane,
Go to Microsoft.com and search for the Office 2007 compatibility pack. Download and install. You'll now be able to open the files.
Alternate suggestions: A) Install Open Office 3 which can also read .docx files. Start a Google account because Google Documents can read them, too. _________________ Be well,

OpenOffice 3 will also open the docx format without any plugins.
It runs on Windows, Mac (PPC and Intel), and Linux.
Plus, it's free. Gotta love that.

.docx
This extension is used by one of Microsoft's replacements for the DOC format. It can only be read by machines with MS-Word (at least version 12) installed. It is a safer sibling to the DOCM format.
So, to make it easier on yourself use the Open Office product which originates the .docx extension or use MS-Word, v12.
Quote from Open Office Suite: WRITER can of course read all your old Microsoft Word documents, or save your work in Microsoft Word format for sending to people who are still locked into Microsoft products. From version 3.0 - WRITER can also open .docx files created with Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X.

Whenever I download a .docx file from Voices.com, my computer, for some reason, wants to save it as a .zip file. All I do is change the .zip extention to .docx and then I can open it in Word.
I have Word 97 and I may have had to download a plug-in from Microsoft's website that allows that version of Word to access .docx files. But I really don't recall. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Lee,
The reason that happens is because the .docx file format is actually a ZIP file containing several small text files each of which serve up a part of full document. The applications that can read the format simply unpack the ZIP file and display the full document. _________________ Be well,

I find this interesting. I sent a note to voices.com about this, and they basically alluded that I've been the only one to mention that I had a problem opening these docx documents, and that it was a problem with my computer settings. Maybe I'm not the only one?? _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

I have been on chat at least once with them about this - perhaps even twice. And was basically told the same thing - that something was wrong with my system.
When I click on the link, I get a screen with some folders and files that I do not recognize. Any other DOCX file opens fine on my computer (a new PC with Windows X .
Laurynda - got any idea why some of us who use the latest software are having difficulty opening these docx files? And since you take the time to include the note about them being Docx files, perhaps it might be just as simple to save the documents as regular doc files before posting them. That might solve the problem. _________________ Playing for a living...
