I spent a good twenty minutes last night as I shut down all of my equipment trying to find which hard drive or other piece of equipment was dying. There was the subtle high pitched whine and the upper register soft grinding noise of bearings going bad.
But once everything was shut off I still heard it....until I shut off my "ghost light", a lamp with a low watt compact florescent bulb in it that I keep on all the time to find my way around that part of the house in the dark (plus I'm an old theater hand). Sounds just like a drive wanting to go bad, or a mysterious water leak. Bye bye bulb.

Just remember that all CFLs have Mercury in them so you have to dispose of them properly. You will probably need to contact a recycler to find out where you need to take the bulb. Law dictates that these bulbs be disposed of in a way deemed safe, not put into regular trash, and ultimately in a landfill.
Lesson to learn; try to not break one inside your home. If you do, open all the windows and doors in the room and let it air out for at least ten minutes, espically if you have small children. _________________ Does life start at 40? |
