After making another dozen demos for other folks I've finally cobbled together a new Commercial Demo for myself. I spent an hour with one of those famous consulting female gurus of the voiceover business and she encouraged me to rely more on my real and natural reads as opposed to my more typically flamboyant pieces. Admittedly my past commercial demos could just about be confused with a character demo. This includes a couple of her favorites which are not totally natural either, but when a guru speaks I like to give it a whirl. Your thoughts are welcome.

Bruce Miles Commercial Demo

Thank you,

Bruce

You KNOW how much I love your voice. I think this is a splendid sampler— I never once thought about how long it was.

I might ask for one thing.
The very end, when you're talking about all that yummy stuff— is that from a completely produced piece? Or is it possible to make that end with more of a "button"—with a musical finial on the end?

Deebs, as a master of minutiae I labored over that issue. I have the dry voice track and could jiggle the music to button it, but the contrarian in me said "but that's not the end of the commercial copy", yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm glad I don't charge me what I charge others.

I'll stew on it some more. Thanks,

B

hi, bruce

i hestitate to give anyone else advice since i've been puzzling over my own demo/website stuff so long. but you've been nice enough to offer comment in the past, so it seems rude not to respond.

i think i know the lovely guru of which you speak. i'm trying to please her as well, while remaining true to what i know works. it's a tough balancing act.

am wondering if that little monologue about your "dad" is most like your regular voice. it certainly has the most natural sound and is what i would think this new style of demo would call to be in front.

the other variations-on-a-bruce are fine too, but they feel more like the excellent work of an excellent voice actor.

as for some of the other reads: i'm jealous.

my 2-cents worth...which, adjusted for inflation means i probably owe YOU money.

will be interested in hearing more from other perspectives.

I like it. It has a consistent brand (maybe that's not the word) that flows through each clip... and easy to listen to.

Well I played with the ending of the last piece and sliding a couple of syllables around I was able to get the last several words to line up with the music persactly.

Revised ending

Hmmmm....

"Sounds like Santa Claus!" exclaimed DeWitt.

I clapped with glee, I really did.

I like spiffy endings.

Great stuff, Bruce!

Okay, the only thing I would say is you have one too many conversational pieces. Tell me to buzz off if you wish....but I think you have the kind of voice where you can pull off what most can't in the VOG range.

I think something brief showcasing some sort of NFL Films announcer type thing or something massively huge and sort of campy sounding in the middle to contrast all the wonderful conversational spots. It would be something character announce-ish for a commercial instead of just pure character (ala a video game or something).

Just my thoughts. Great work Bruce!

I love your "conversational" voice Bruce, like buttah- and your tire warehouse spot made me smile as it always does when I hear it....the revised ending is perfect. Smile

I think this is a fabby idea, and I'll bet it's something you could "bring" without having to ponder it.

Yeah, but it kind of violates the "natural" thing doesn't it? Although the Mayfield Dairy spot kind of covers that NFL sound, maybe? And this is one of the ones Ms. real and natural said I must include.

You can't put it all into one demo, so I've come to the point where I now have over 20 demos covering various shades of the business, like:

Narration - Corporate (big fluffy pieces)
Narration - Training programs
Narration - Medical/Technical
Narration - Television (documentary)
Narration - Educational (children)
Narration - Text books
Narration - Travel
Audio books
Children's audio books
Character
Animation
Auto
Imaging
Impersonations
Phone on Hold
Political
Producer (showing my casting and editing abilities)
Senior
US Presidents (I've now played 8 of them)
Santa Claus and the Elves

Now I don't display all of these on my website, but I find them useful when responding to requests for samples of these kinds of work.

I even put together a special one for XM Satellite radio back when they used to offer me as a commercial voice, but now I'm told they're mostly grabbing junior producers and janitors to read their spots.
