A while back, my sister-in-law was busting my chops about Facebook and how many of my so-called "friends" were actually total strangers. Well, today I welcomed my 500th Facebook friend and thought I'd do a little analysis.
Of my 500 friends, 347 of them are people I have definitely met in person. Only 2 of those are relatives. Another 126 are people I've not met face to face but have conversed with in a forum such as this one.
That leaves 27 people unaccounted for. Of those, there are 23 I believe I may have met but I can't be certain. How is that possible? As the alumni secretary for my high school class, I send a friend request to all of my classmates, regardless of how well I might have known them. Forty of them are now my FB friends, although there are 10-15 I may or may not have encountered during school days or at a subsequent reunion but have no strong recollection one way or the other.
Similarly, there are a few people I probably said hello to at the VO Mixer in NY last December but can't be certain. Then there are 3 or 4 people among my FB friends who I honestly have no idea who the hell they are.
Of my 500 friends, 415 had profile pictures of themselves when I checked. Another 58 had profile pictures but they were of something or someone else (mostly children, pets, or TV, movie or cartoon characters). And only 27 had not yet gotten around to posting (or figured out how to post) any picture at all. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
