I blogged a bit about it here:
http://www.adamverner.com/blog/2009/07/29/the-pronounciation-conundrum/
But I'm wondering if anyone has any more good resources to share....what's your first go-to resource for pronunciations?
I learned IPA in grad school - does anyone actually use it in "normal" life? I've found it useful in a few situations, especially with foreign words. _________________ Adam

Steve - that's great, thanks for the reply!
That works great for words, but like I mentioned in my blog post, what about proper names? For example, I had this doozy recently:
Dag Hammarskjöld
He's not in the Merrian Webster! _________________ Adam

You'll find proper nouns at Merriam Webster. I did a piece on philosophers a few years back and found most of the names were in there. Hammarskjold is there, too. |

I'd venture to say there are quite a few of us who would have no problem with this name because we're old enough to remember when it was mentioned in the evening news at least once or twice a week. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I think if you do a search you will find there is at least one thread with some great sources for pronunciation. |

Ask any New Yorker - aside from the pronunciation you'll get directions to Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza |

NBC Handbook of Pronunciation
It's out of print and a bit dated now, but still a good ref. book if you can find one in good condition. _________________ Genus |

I think they still use this book at 30 Rock...
to even-up the legs on a wobbly desk.
(or the comedy on SNL).
