|
|
As part of your local TV station's public service policy groups are invited in to record a short piece to promote membership. This week it's your turn to sit in front of TV camera for the first time ...........
You're a Brit.
If you need to listen, here is the original piece as broadcast.

Trust me, it's not as easy as it looks.
Are you an introvert? Would you like to join the Introvert Society? We regularly gather in separate locations to sit alone in corners and stare at people until they feel uncomfortable, then go to a sci-fi shop and buy a book by Terry Pratchett – hallowed be his name.
To join us call my mother and if she likes the sound of you she’ll send you details, providing your eyes aren’t too close together.
The Introvert society, alone together and not wanting to make a fuss.
Thank you |

Here's my Introvert.
Bwah! As though I could possibly compete with Katrina as a Brit. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Well, the fair competition would be if I read it in an Amercian accent, and believe me, you wouldn't want to hear it! You do a lot better Brit (though this is a conglomeration of several regional accents) than I do American. |

It is a bit of a melange, isn't it?

I recently purchased a book on accents by Robert Blumenfeld. I've been reading the book and listening to the CDs that come with it. D, I definitely recognized Liverpool somewhere in there.

yeh-- but my problem is the "somewhere" part.
My consistency with the different regionals is severely lacking. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Hmmm. Philip Banks invites the Americans to do British accents. Yeah, that sounds safe.
What the hell...I'm not a professional yet, so I have no professional pride to lose. I'll throw mine on the block.

Flame away Phil...just please be specific, I'm here for the education. Simon, Mary, Kat, Mike, et al feel free to take a few shots as well. I know there's some inconsistencies in it, I'd like an "expert" opinion from the ears that can really hear.
Oh, and I forgot last time; a big boatful of arigatos to Mike-san for hosting my clips for me until I get this webspace thing straightened out. You're tops, mate.

All I can say is
wow.
I'm no judge, that's for sure---but I know "charming" when I hear it! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Very good! The story hung together really well, and I couldn't tell you were 'doing an accent' at all - except.......
Details is deetails.
Very impressed indeed! Reminded me of Derek and Clive a little bit, it you know who they are. |

Superbly done, Pat. De'tails and details would've been rectified in a proper session with the next take.
The character should sound as spooky as he is spooked by being on TV. They only need new members so there is enough of them on the station platform when they go trainspotting to discourage gangs of Cub Scouts from bullying them. The men wear clothing from the "If it was good enough for your Father, God rest his soul, it's good enough for you" collection.
The only female member is Clare-Louise. At home she says nothing, in the group she is as close to an Alpha Male as they are likely to get largely because the rest of the group think Alpha Male is a secret delivery service run by the government. See, the devil is in the detail! |

Who is this "Mary" you keep talking about? Don't know any British Marys on this board...
Looking forward to listening to this when I get home later in the week (no monitors where I am right now)

I thought I remembered from posts earlier last year that YOU were a British transplant living up north...that damned little man in my head's been telling me stories. I think that's what the little pills were for, to punish him...when the nice men in white come around again I'm sure they'll bring some...they always bring me nice things...
Derek and Clive? Wasn't that a really ultra-vulgar improv comedy routine with Peter Cook back in the late 6o's or early 70'? I seem to remember a skit with a guy saying the worst job he ever had was working for Marilyn Monroe pulling lobsters out of...never mind...Actually I was trying to channel a character voice I remember from o Python sketch, I think it was Michael Palin.
Thank you, Phil. My first try I played it up as a lot more hesitant and fearful but I thought it was annoying to listen to. The visual I got from Kat's was a lot of unkempt frizzy hair, thick glasses, large shapeless sweatshirts and an inability to look the camera in the eye. And you...without going into details, I've seen that guy at every sci-fi- convention I've ever gone to. |
