|
|
This will be my main VO computer.
# 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
# 128GB solid-state drive
# SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
# Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide
# Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Is getting a solid state drive a good idea? Any issues I should be aware of before purchase? The other options is a 500 gb 5400 rpm drive.
The computer will be in my recording area which is room about 4 feet wide by 6.5 feet long with an 8 foot ceiling.
Any suggestions or criticisms?

Only thing I would say about the SS drive is "128GB isn't as much storage space as it used to be". Have an external drive to back up files.
I just bought my SECOND 1TB drive. _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

It is amazing how 128 gb can be considered small.
The way my apartment is layed out my only good recording space is a large walk in closet. It is across the apartment from my desk area. I figured on running cables to the closet but it is a long run. It also looks really bad.
I only need a small portion of the closet for clothes. I figured on buying a small desk with for rack spaces that will fit and using the macbook there for recording. Once I am done, I can do any serious editing at the main desk where I have a nice LCD and near field monitors.
The interface is an mbox. |

128GB is plenty adequate for VO. It would take a year or more to fill that up, even if you were storing only WAV files. Why keep old audition files anyway?
Naturally, a backup is mandatory for any computer. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

You're using a Mac Mini, right? I bought a refurb and the hard drive crashed in three months. Apple handled it all, but I became a fan of Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine. |

George,
I always keep my audition files. Sometimes I've booked a job weeks or even months after doing an audition. Being able to go back and listen to what I sent has saved me a lot of time in session because I know what they mean when they say "remember what you did on your audition?" More than once this has happened in the last 5 years. _________________ Be well,

I learn a lot from my old audition files in terms of what to do and more importantly what not to do, and I save them for at least six months. Ones that are indicative of a particular strength or weakness I save permanently, and they can be handy for demo or generic audition purposes. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Thanks for those words of wisdom, guys!
Always learning something new in this business, and will encourage my clients to do the same. I guess I've dealt with too many who have the mindset of "move on", don't clutter life with old stuff. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George,
No question, it's easy to let too much old stuff accumulate. There is a balance to be struck between having something available and eventually cleaning out the junk. _________________ Be well,
